Is there a strong market for $1k+ snakes?

I was just wondering, when I see snakes on breeders sites for $1500,$2500,$5000, or even $30k are they really moving them at a decent rate. Maybe cause I'm the only person I know that's into reptiles that its uncommon to see folks spend $ like that, my buddy that breeds pitbulls will spend $1500 for a studs sperm, or a dog so I guess its the same. What do you guys think?

Re: Is there a strong market for $1k+ snakes?

I think there is a very good market for $1k+ snakes.
Combo's are all the rage now...I think it is easier to move an expensive snake than it is to move a clutch of single co-doms.
People looking for a pet aren't going to spend that kind of money on a snake, but there are so many BP breeders out there looking to improve their collections and keep up with the trends.

This is the same question that I have been thinking about. I really think it would depend on the true market that you are targeting. If you are looking to sell to collectors or breeders I think the market would be real strong. If you are looking to sell a few snakes at a local show, or to people as pets I would bet that the market is horribly small. So in the end I really think it depends on its target market.

At the White Plains, NY show yesterday there were lots of 1k plus snakes being sold. I saw a 6k snake get sold so the market is there, just have to find it.

hmmmmmm...... when I see Josh Marki I drop at least that....

I think with the more expensive snakes you are looking at breeders or serious collectors. Or ppl that just have cash and then some!!

Yep, my higher dollar stuff moves WAY faster than the cheaper stuff. I usually can sell my my lavs and reduced pattern clowns in a matter of days. Selling the stuff in the range of Black pastel, lessers, pins, hypos... is tough. Especially males. I am sure if I did shows it may be easier to move the cheap stuff, but with just internet sales it takes a while. Overall though I have not had too much trouble selling any snakes. I have to sit on the lower dollar stuff a little longer but I was still able to move every snake that I had planned on selling this season.

1K snakes are just within the range of what some of the more obsessed or wealthy hobbiests can afford, so yeah... 30K are less likely to sell fast, but they are usually new(er) morphs so there's always interest in that kind of thing! Usually big time breeders or collectors are the ones buying those expensive ones from each other.

Same here. Last year and this year I had no problems moving supers and double co-doms and single co-dom females. I pretty much got my asking price for them within a week or two tops.

I know people complain about tanking prices in the ball market, but overall I think its still a fairly strong market. You just have to think long term and have a plan.

But I agree, that moving normals and single co-dom males can be a chore. It's reached that point that people who are breeding/want to breed already have most of the single gene animals, and the people who are buying for pets aren't going to spend $400 for a pet snake.
