    Uromastyx to skinny?

I've had my occellated uromastyx for about 7 months now. She was skinny when i first got her but since i haven't seen pictures of other uros when i bought her i thought it wasn't a problem but i went to a different pet store the other day and i saw how some uros get really fat. Is this a problem? The reason why i wasn't concerned bevore is because shes active, digs and eats everyday.

    Re: Uromastyx to skinny?

if you could post some pics it would be great. i had a pair of wc saharan orange uros and i loved them. i almost lost my male a couple months after they arrived. he stopped eating and got very lethargic. i had almost lost all hope until i seen him perk up when i was feeding my leopard geckos. he seen the crix and started following them with his eyes. your not "supposed" to feed uros bugs but i had nothing left to lose so i gave him a couple. he went crazy. started putting on tons of weight and got very energetic and colored up very nicely.
so i talked to 2 of the only big breeders and they said that they to feed crix to help get weight on uros. so if you arent already i would start feeding it some bugs and make sure you dust love on occasion. also make sure you have at least a reptisun 5.0 i had a 10.0 uvb bulb. it will help dramatically. uv bulbs are only good for 6 months of use so replace twice a year.

when I had mine I would feed bird food also. I bred all different types of finches so i would put in some finch food with the greens along with some bearded dragon pellets. Have you changed the diet at all? what type of greens are you offering? I would try some dandelion greens, collard, mustard, turnip, some carrots, squash, different fruits. But it also couldn't hurt to see a reptile vet to make sure nothing else is going on. Parasites can do some pretty nasty things to these guys. do you know if it is captive or wild? Also do you have a big enough water dish for it to soak? I would give my guy a bath at least once a week for about 15 minutes just to make sure he was getting water

    Re: Uromastyx to skinny?

yes, your uro is very skinny. the fat reserves in his tail are almost gone.
as the other poster mentioned i would soak him at LEAST once a week maybe twice. 15 minutes each time. you have to have a good thermometer a digital baking one will work just fine. make sure the water is warm about 105 degrees. uros get cold quickly so if the water temp goes down quickly before the 15 minutes are up then pull him early. now if your uro is cold dont go throwing him in hot water. make sure he has been basking first.
a fecal sample taken to the vet will help. have the vet do a fecal float. the fresher the poo the better. not sure on your feeding frequency but if possible id increase it. feed him everyday. endive, bok choy, collard greens, dandelion greens are all available at the super market. stay away from spinach its a calcium inhibitor in reptiles. also stay away from ALL lettuces they have almost no nutritional value. rose pedals also are a delicacy to uros. mine always favored the yellow. make sure it comes from an organic sorce. o pesticides or fertilizers. dandelion flowers are a favorite in the summer. wax worms are a nice fatty treat if hell eat them. right now id soak him and feed the hell out of him. cal a reptile vet and ask for an open appointment to bring in a sample for a fecal float. normally cheap if a office visit fee isnt charged.
    keep us up to date.

Im pretty sure she was wild caught. I'll see if changing her diet would work. I soak twice a week and i was thinking of feeding her some wax worms see if she gets a little fatter with that
