Newb breeding question
So, I have had a few locks this season... nothing too exciting, until this morning .....
(this is my first breeding season, so keep that in mind)....
When I put my Ghost boy in with one of my normal females (both are healthy, breeding size all that jazz).... My girl FLIPPED out. She was zipping all over, and they started striking at each other. They almost tipped over the tub they were in. This happened within about 3 minutes.
I got nervous, and took them out. Now I am letting them settle down away from each other.
Is this normal? Just so you know, I am absolutely certain of sex (I have probed twice, and a friend of mine once). This didn't happen with any of the other pairs I have paired up.

Re: Newb breeding question
Hmm. It might be because of the sensing of insecurity and territory being invaded. Just my two cents.

The girl has been with a boy before (they showed no interest in each other, and just kind of 'hung out' together).... Maybe they just don't like each other?
Bad first date I guess!

Is it their first time courting this season, or the last court was last season? (Use a sperm plug from another male) Kinda arouse the situation for me sometimes
However, just try resting them for 3 days and give in another go and see how it goes. Keep us posted, all the best !

Re: Newb breeding question
I've alway put my males into the females tubs and until this season had never had an issue before. However this season I put a male into a females tub and this particular female did the exact same thing. I removed the male quickly and didn't pair her for a couple weeks. Well I just paired her again last night with a different male and she hasn't done anything as of yet.
In my personal opinion I think she reacted the way she did the first time because she felt threatened. I also cool my animals and initially when I made my first pairing, it was the day I started cooling. So I think that had something to do with it also. Once the female realized that it was cooling down on a daily basis she relaxed and almost welcomed a male into her tub. I think that maybe the cooling and leaving her alone for a couple weeks got her into "breeding mode" and she relaxed a bit. The first pairing to her was a cinnamon male that is 1900 grams. So I thought that his size may have threatened her also. Last night I put a 1000 gram pastel with her and she acted so calm. That may also have something to do with it. I've read that the female chooses the male when it comes time to breed, so maybe she just didn't like the male cinnamon. I could be way off with this, but it's just my observation/opinion.
I'd let your female relax a few days by herself. Keep from handling her a whole lot while you are doing this. If you cool, continue to cool. And try again in a couple weeks and maybe try a different male (if one is available).
EDIT: To clarify. I put my males into my females tubs because I don't like to move around my females a whole lot. Especially when I'm trying to get eggs out of them. I prefer to move males instead. Just a matter of preference, but I thought I should clarify why I do that.
Hope this helped you.

Thanks for all the helpful information everyone. It is her first time pairing up with the male, so she just might not like him too much. I will let them relax alone for a few days, and try again. If I get the same results, I will just not match them up anymore. I've got another big girl I might try to pair up my boy with, so we'll see. He's also a slight bit bigger then that particular female, so that may have been it as well.
I have ALWAYS heard to put males into the females tubs. Is that not correct?

You can move males or move females... It's just a matter of preference. What works for you may not work for someone else. It doesn't mean that either of you are wrong, just that you have your own way of doing things.

Re: Newb breeding question
when I start breeding season I walways do so after I clean the tub(s) this make them a little more willing ot mellow out since they think in new cage( works with my asfs, until I fed them all off 2weeks ago)
I think i have a harder time getting the the eggs from a females than I do breeding ( unless the male not interested in breeding like my pinstripe is ) ( little bum ) lol..
