What Should I Get?
I currently have 2 bp's. I want to add a few more to be able to do a little small time breeding as a hobby. But I also have been admiring a Hogg Island Boa from a local private breeder. From the little bit of research I have done, it's a good deal. Also, I'd like to try something different just to see how much different a boa's personality is. (I've heard it's a night and day difference) Then...there's a little nagging voice inside my head that a Hognose would be a fun little Colubrid to try out.
I only have 3 empty spot's left in my rack, and I don't want to waste any on anything other than BP's...but I kinda really want to try out a Boa or Hognose.
Vote for me!
Everyday I wake up and check "The Forbes List"...If I'm not on there, I go to work.

Re: What Should I Get?
I dunno, I love my boa, but as aquire more and more ball pythons, I kinda regret getting the boa because it isnt working toward my projects, and the empty space in my rack could be better used with my projects

Boas are great. I love both my boas and bps and I really don't think I could pick one over the other. Hog islands are great. I have some friends That just had a litter of Sears line Hogg islands and they are beautiful. I would sat go with the boa but its your choice. Good luck and keep us posted on your decision.

Everyone will have different opinions. If it were me I'd get another BP.

Re: What Should I Get?
I got a BCI boa after I got my ball python. I had the BP for about 1.5 years before doing that. I'm very glad I did. The attitude and personality is a LOT different, and occasionally, rarely, aggressive.
Don't let that worry you though, I have so much fun with my boa, he's great. The different personality and a bit of "take no crap" attitude is great.
I also have a Northern Pine Snake, which generally (not always) have even more attitude and personality. Some of them are fairly nasty, you gotta watch out. But mine is very calm and rarely gets mad at me, but it's so cute when he does: he rattles his tail against something trying to be a rattlesnake! Daaw.

He's also VERY curious and wants to see, explore, and crawl on everything. He gets a little annoyed when I don't let him and gently puffs some air out his nostrils. It sounds like a little kid getting annoyed.
So, all I can speak for is BCI boas and northern pines, but I recommend both. Just do your research, you'll be fine no matter what you get.

If you want to try out breeding, stick with the BPs for now. No sense in mixing if your expanding to start a little breeding project. Also, if you ever decided to breed Boa's, you would need a LOT more room

Yeah, I'm starting to think I'm gonna stick with nothing but BP's, for now.
By the way... I doubt I would ever breed boas. I just had the itch to get one beacuse they seemed refreshing to me.

Ya know I used to want a boa or a pine snake....then i took care of my friends HUGE HUGE pine snake. He was nice but wanted to be out ALL the time. At one point in trying to put him back in he literally flipped me over and took off. Super crazy strong!! Wrapped himself around a couple of tanks in the same room and would NOT let go. I was a little nervous but finally got him back in.
After that ....I will just stick to my BP's.... I am sure not being familiar w this paticular snake is what really freaked me out...but I got over my "want" list.

Re: What Should I Get?
One thing to keep in mind when counting slots in your rack and wondering what species to add.....is what are the environmental requirements for the species you want to house with BP's? Will they thrive in the same ambient temps and the same hot spot as the rest of the rack? Will they be ok with that kind of humidity? (although humidity is something you can customize per tub if you're careful)
AND you will want to consider quarantine needs....regardless of species, you don't want to immediately toss a new animal into the same rack with your current collection. Doing so can be risky...especially bringing a boa into a ball python collection.
