    Snake Escape

I cross-posted the message below on the Colubrid board, but it doesn't get much activity. Since this is the most popular board on the site, I was hoping someone here might have some advice.

Anyone have any ideas on how to find a 20-gram normal-colored corn snake in a 4220-sq-ft house? My little one got out last night and I don't know where to begin. He's so tiny that I'm almost afraid to frantically start destroying the house for fear of hurting him inadvertantly.

The reptile room has an ambient temperature of 80 degrees, so I'm hoping he hasn't actually left that room. Unfortunately, if he has, there are at least a million places for a snake that small to hide.

    HELP

We had one a bit smaller than that escape and didn't turn up for 2 weeks in a 900 sqft apartment and he was chilling in the bathroom one day when my wife got home. Check under the fridge and stove first that's where I would and did

Big house, small snake, oh boy. I wouldn't even know where to start. I guess the best I can say is to slowly take the reptile room apart. With a snake that small I would even check your racks or other enclosures in case it got into one of them. Check the normal drawers, closets, boxes, furniture, etc., and of course anything that produces heat. I wish you the best of luck, I know that will be a hard snake to find.

process of elimination one room at a time starting with the room the enclosure is in.. im talking shoes, dirty cloths, pockets, tear it apart.. then move on to the next closest room.. pay very close attention to not leave the doors open until you find it.. hopefully you will find it in the second room and not the last one lol.. good luck!

and the good thing is as long as you watch the doors you can be reasonably certain its still in the house

Not to bring down any hopes, but a snake that small would most likely be able to fit under even the best sealed door. Just keep looking every where, don't give up hope.

Bottle traps with live pinkes. He'll go in, but hopefully not get out. You make them by cutting a 2L soda bottle at the bottom of the flared part, turn that inward, then tape the whole business together.

Flour around the edges of the room to see where he's been. Masking tape, which isn't all that sticky, but sticky enough to trap a 20gm hatchling. Use Vegetable oil to unstick it.

    Good luck!
    Blessed be, Betsy
