im a newbie to morphs & have a few questions

My first question is how do you know if your python is het for a morph? Is het a term used when your animal has a recessive gene? If you have an animal is het for something do you have to have an animal of the opposite sex that is also het for the same thing to get the morph? I'm sorry if the answers to my question are posted somewhere else, I'm new to the site & don't know how to find everything yet.

My second question is what are some good morphs I could get if I was to breed my pastel? Could I get some pastels if I breed it with a normal? I read pastel is dominate is that right?

there is no way to know for sure if its het, but if it was bought as a normal it most likely is. yes if you breed a het to a het or a visual morph you will get the visual morph. pastel is co dominate if you breed pastel to a pastel you get the dominate which is a super pastel. if you breed a pastel to a normal you will get 50% pastel 50% normal. as for morphs to breed to your pastel pretty much any co dominate morph will give you something cool i would go with another pastel for super pastels or a spider for bees. hope this answered all you questions

Re: im a newbie to morphs & have a few questions

how do you know if your python is het for a morph?
There is no way to tell if a normal looking BP is het for a recessive gene. You've got to take the breeders word for it. If you buy a het you have to wait until its mature and breed it to another that is het for the same gene or a BP that has expresses the gene to "prove" the het, which can take years, so its important that you trust any breeder you buy a het from.
Lets just use Albino's as an example since its a recessive gene. If you breed a het albino to another het Albino then each egg has a 25% chance to be a Albino. If you breed a het albino to a Albino then each egg with have a 50% chance of being a Albino and any that come out normal will be het for albino.

    dominate is that right?
No, Pastel is codominate. That means if you have a Pastel Ball Python in that snake's DNA base pairs is 1 Pastel gene and 1 Normal gene, if you breed a Pastel to a Pastel each egg has a 25% chance of getting both pastel genes and being a "Super" pastel.

I'm no good as explaining genetics so I would reccomend reading this thread:
    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...Basic-Genetics
It provides a very nice foundation of knowledge about BP genetics.

Thanks a lot & yes that did answer my questions. I just got a het pied pair & I can't wait until they get old enough to breed. Pieds are one of my all time favorite morphs.

This is a bit trickier to explain but 1,2 &4 are base morphs - you cannot make those from any other morphs.

So to make a pied you would need to either buy a pied or some het pieds (these look like normals because pied is recessive ).

To make a mojave or a spider you would have to buy a mojave or spider or a combo morph that contained them. Mojaves are co-dominant but spiders are dominant.

Number 3 however is a combo morph - a bumblebee is a pastel spider.

Have a read through this post to see if it explains things a little.
