Have a good friend count your pushups/situps?

This is what I'd do. Setup a routine. For example: Monday (pushups/situps) Tuesdays (rest) Wednesdays (rest) Thursdays (p/s) Fridays (rest) Saturday (rest) Sunday (p/s) Monday (rest), etc..

This allows you work out often while still giving your body time to recover. Recovering is when your body is building strength. They say you shouldn't workout the same muscle twice in less than 72 hours and if 72 hrs. later you're still sore then wait until the soreness is gone. Being sore means your body is repairing itself. You don't want to tear the muscle fiber before its healed itself again.

When doing pushups and situps take a good second to go up and a good second to go down. Always get a full extension while keeping tension on your muscles. For example, while doing pushup and you go up, don't lock your elbow and when going down dont allow chest to touch floor. Stop a 1/2 inch before touching the floor.Locking your elbows or touching the floor gives your muscles a break when they need to under constant stress. Also go all the way up and all the way down just before you lock you elbow or chest touches the floor.

Lastly, if it were me I would do one set of pushups until I can't anymore, then give yourself a 2-3 minute break and repeat. You'll see that the more sets you do, the less reps you'll do cus you'll be tiring yourself out. But this is a great way to increase strength and endurance. As weeks go by you'll be able to do more and more reps and more and more sets. At which point I'd cut the rest period between sets to about 1-1.5 minutes.

    Hope this helps.

PS: stretching post workout helps from getting too sore

    Partner up with someone !!

I find that working out with a partner helps, because they can push you to go a bit further then you think you can ...

The worst you could do is start training to late. Now is the time to train consistently. You have plenty of time , you'll do fine
