    Humid hides...

I currently have two rocks hides for my snakes. One is exactly like this one, and the other one is very much like it. I put wet sphagnum moss on the floor of the hides and the humidity in each of them is about 95% rH. This is also over the heating element.

My question is if the snakes spend a fair amount of time in there like they do should I worry about scale rot? If so is there a better way to put the moss in there to make a humid hide without the risk of scale rot?

    Thank you in advance.

I usually don't use humid hides unless they are having trouble shedding. If you just like the look of the hide, you could put what ever substrate you are using on the bottom. I could only assume that if your snake spends a lot of time in the humid hide with that high of humidity and moisture that you are running a great risk of scale rot.

    Re: Humid hides...

Thank you... Guess for now I'll remove the moss and leave it a dry hide.

The only problem with high humidity is the actual moisture of it. If there is condensation forming inside the hide from the moss, I would remove it. However if there is not, and he seems to like it, it's fine.

In the wild Ball Pythons make their homes inside termite mounds, which are very very high humidity...90-95%, but since their isn't actual moisture in there they are fine.
(This is something I have read on this forum before, just can't find the thread right now)

If they prefer this in the wild, I would say its fine in captivity.
