    wet substrate

I'm very new to the ball python community, getting my first snakes a few days ago. They seem to be settling in fairly well, but I just had a few questions involving substrate. I have an RBI rack and I am currently using paper towels, but have had trouble with any amount of split water causing a large wet spot among a majority of tub floor. I have been continually changing it when this event occurs because 1) I don't want them to be sitting on a wet or damp surface (is this a legitimate concern?) and 2) the damp paper towel causes condensation on the front of the tub and a humidity of around 80% (normally somewhere between 60-70%). But wish I didn't have too because I am trying to let the snakes calm down and settle in. I guess my questions are as follows: is a wet substrate bad for the snake? is condensation on the front of the tub a good or bad thing (assuming 80% humidity is good for snakes in shed)? and is this problem just an indication that I should switch substrates?

What type of water dish are you using?
Are the snakes soaking in the water dishes?

    Re: wet substrate

I am using the water bowls ordered from Reptile Basics. The one that it is happening with most is in shed and seems to be soaking occasionally, and thus his substrate (paper towels) becomes wet.

    Re: wet substrate

I'm not sure what kind of water dish you are using, but you could try using a ceramic dish with a fairly wide base to make it a little more difficult for your snake to tip over. You could also purchase a PVC coupler to house a deli cup for use as a water dish. As far as the moisture build up, it's not good for a snake to set on a wet surface such as a paper product for extended periods of time. You could drill several holes in the tub to increase airflow which should help with the condensation buildup.
    Hope this helps!

Do not put alot of water in the dish, I have a girl that soaks alot, I only put 1/2 inch of water in the bowl daily to prevent wet substrate.
