    Newb with some ???

    Hi guys,

Total newbie here. I am lookin into getting a BP and have started doing my research on cages, etc. but I have a question or two. Based on what I've seen on their website and read on here about the quality I'm really drawn towards the 3x2 14" RBI cage. My only problem is that I have a nosey nephew who like to get into everything and would really like the ability to lock the cage but I did not see that option on the site. Does anyone know if this is possible? I thought about just switching the "locks" that come on the cage with keyed locks from say HD or Lowe's as the "locks" look to be pretty similar. Is this possible or has someone done this? I welcome any and all advice.

    Matt

P.S. How much will my BP affect the temps, etc. in my enclosure? I am planning to go ahead and get all my stuff get it set up with as close to perfect temps./humidity as I can before I even bring him/her home so that all I have to do is put him/her in and let it adjust to it's new home. I just don't want to do that then bring it home and everything get all screwed up although I realize that will sometimes happen regardless.

    Hello Matt, and to BP.net...

How big is the BP you are looking at getting? If you are getting anything smaller than an adult then a 3X2 is going to be way too big and possibly cause you some problems with your snake eating. If you know you want to have a 3X2 as the final, permanent enclosure, then I would look at using a simple tub set-up or a 20 gal. Long screen top tank until your snake is big enough (at least 36-38 inches). You mentioned that you need something that locks. Most glass tanks with sliding lids have tabs for pad locks and there are ways to drill holes in tubs to lock them down with locks.
I don't know if Reptile Basics offers locking latches. The best thing to do is call or e-mail Rich and ask him. If they don't, you can look at some of the other cage manufacturers and see if they do...

I don't believe they have locks, but you can get a dowel and some of those 1/2 circle metal clips. Sorry, the workers at the lumber yard hate when I come in But locking them....you might have to figure that one out on your own, unless the dowels are tall enough he can reach them to pull them out.

The precious baby girl I plan on getting is only about a month old. I know, way to small for the 2x3. Maybe I should wait till she's big enough to get it. IDK. Oh and due to the less than reputable pet stores in my area I feel like I'd feel more comfortable getting a BP from a breeder online. That's where I found the one I fell in love with. Is getting one from an online breeder a good idea?

For a BP that small, I would set it up in something like a 10-15 quart tub. You set a tub up just like a regular tank. 2 hides, a water bowl, Under Tank heater or Flexwatt tape, thermostat and a thermometer or temp gun. I'm doing the same thing with my boas. They aren't big enough for the 4X2 enclosures yet so I have them living in tubs until they are ready.
Buying online can be either a good experience or a bad one. A little research on your part will go a long way. First, you can go this website. They have a Board of Inquiry that people post good or bad experiences with breeders. You can type in the breeders name in the search function and it will pull up all the threads on that breeder. If there aren't any, you can start a new thread in the BOI section asking about them, etc.

It's best, when you contact them, to use e-mail, and save them all, just in case a dispute arises. Make sure you have them explain their Terms Of Service. That way there are no misunderstandings about what guarantees they make and what responsibilities each party assumes. On the day of delivery, make sure you can be home to accept the package. Also have a camera handy so you can document the opening and unpacking of the box and snake. As soon as possible, send an e-mail to the seller and let them know that the package arrived, the condition of the package, and the status of the animal. Most online transactions go smoothly and without incidence, however, ther are some shady characters out there, which is why it's always good to ask around. There is an Inquiries/Feedback sub-section in the Business section on this website that would be a good place to start.

I hope this helps some and happy hunting...

I have 2 zilla critter cages. They are all glass, with a sliding screen top that can be locked. I got mine at petsmart. I was worried about the same thing and I bought these cages and some locks and my son isnt getting in, and the BP isnt getting out. Check out their website, see what you think.http://www.zilla-rules.com/products/critter-cages.htm

YES, A WORLD OF YES. Buying from breeders is always better, provided they are reputable and genuinely care about their animals.

Put it this way...I work for a company who (among MANY other things) sells snakes, including Ball Pythons, as pets. And I would NEVER buy a snake from the pet store I work for. It is worth the time and effort to get one from a good breeder! Besides, supporting a quality breeder is always awesome!
