I have some females that go through this behavior(not all). I believe it has to do with nesting and the need to seek out a safe and secure spot to lay the eggs. Just leave her be, she knows what to do.

Thanks guys, this is my first season & am pretty confused as to whats meant to be happening, is she gravid, isn't she, allthough very obvious she is..will wait & see, seemed odd that she is suddenly active after months of inactivity

Yeah, Mona (who laid on 6/22) was quite restless for the last 2 weeks or so... laying inverted, circling, moving her newspaper around, etc. I guess they go through a "nesting period" just like human women! I knew laying was imminent, though, when her behavior suddenly changed - she went from sweet Mona to a hissing jerk, and laid her eggs that night. So based on that, I'd say major crankiness is a good sign they're ready to blow.
