    Wild Snake ID Help

I went into work today to get a canopy for my new fish tank and my co-worker asked if I would take a snake home. At first, I was confused but then she explained how this little baby snake had come to the store.

A man walked in and was wondering if he could feed the snake to his tegu. My co-worker told him no, he should not feed a wild animal to his lizard. He said he didn't know what else to do with it, so he was going to pour gasoline on it and burn it (why he would do this or admit to wanting to do this, I have no idea). My co-worker told him the snake was venomous (to get him to not touch it) so he left it with her to deal with.

Now, I'm not sure what kind of snake this is. I have not touched it but I was hoping to ID it. The guy said he found it in his backyard.

    Re: Wild Snake ID Help

Looks like a Dekay's snake (brown snake). Storeria dekayi
Not a baby. From the coloring, at least a yearling--it's hard to judge size in the pics. Dekay's are tiny snakes, a newborn can curl up on a penny. They eat slugs, worms, and other small invertebrates.
Entirely harmless--a very common snake that people don't see very often because it's so small and secretive.
