    when to breed?

so my females 1200 grams and my males 468 grams. im told november is when most people start the breeding.

is that right? im sure they both will put on some good weight before that especially my male he's a beast of an eater.
and my female is finally eating well.

another question is how exactly does the process work with the females after they hook-up?
like ovulation? what exactly does that mean for them to ovulate? i know how humans ovulate obviously but i dont know how bp's work. and follicles, when do they develope? what are they exaclty? how soon after do follicles develope? how long does it usually take to lay her eggs?

sorry for so many questions but im new to breeding and cant wait to take on the challenge.

oh another question. the temp drops at night at the beginning of the season? or right before?

    any book recomendations?
i have a.d.d. but ill read it several times to get it right lol.

    Re: when to breed?

I asked the same questions, and someone posted another site's timeline with pics. I'm not finding that thread now. When I do, I'll post it. It's the best one I've seen.

As far as temp drops, I don't think they're necessary. I', not doing a temp drop. Right now, I have a male Mojo that's hot to trot, and a few females that must be smelling him. They keep doing the scenting and tail wag...showing they're ready to get it on...

    Good luck on your breeding!

Go to Markus Jayne's web site. His breeding section gives great step by step timeline with pictures. He's been doing this alot longer than most, and everything is very straight forward.

    Re: when to breed?

My distributor says a good marker for the breeding season is Thanksgiving day to start breeding.

My female was over 1200 grams and my male, well hes was 1400, I got him full grown and hefty.

I have my vanilla breeding right now with my normal and hes I'd say 800 grams. My distributor says that as long as the conditions are there, they will breed year round. Because needless to say I was a little shocked to see them locking up when I put him in her cage so I can clean it out. lol.

    is that right?.
1200 is on the small side, but just as important is "how old is she"?

    Re: when to breed?

I am new to breeding too, but have already had a few lock ups this year. I would recommend the book Ball pythons by David G barker. It is a little expensive but well worth the price tag. http://www.vpi.com. It answered a lot of questions that I had.

    Re: when to breed?

ball pythons can breed year round....you just have to make sure both male and female are ready to breed.

as for the book part....get yourself VPI's ball python book......more info than you'll ever need.
