    First Bredli

I went to the Reptile Super Show with no intentions of bringing anything home. That didn't last long. I fell in love a million times and ended up bringing this baby girl home. I've been considering a carpet for a while because I love the way they're built and the way their faces look.

The seller let me hold her.
She bit my thumb, so I bought her! The nice seller evan gave me a discount because she bit me.

She hates me now, so I'm hoping she mellows out a bit with age.

Here she is in her qt setup.

The camera really washes out her colors. I only had the crappy point and shoot. She was by far the best colored Bredli there (I only saw two others though).

So now I have a new girl, and a perfect half circle of teeth marks on my thumb.
The best part is, she's already eaten! No problems there.

Here's a couple other carpets from the show.

I am not sure if it's true or not but I have been told that Bredli's aren't carpet pythons.

Very pretty... I love the Bredlis! From what other people say, carpets have a tendency to be nippy babies - but usually mellow with age. Mine has never bitten or struck at me, so I guess he breaks that stereotype!

Thanks for the compliments on her! I'm hoping she chills out a bit. A snappy 8ft snake would be a bit too exciting.

I (think) they are very close, but a different species. They defineitely have the same look and face about them. I've heard Bredli's get a bit thicker bodied a bit longer.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression they were the same. I meant to say that I love the look and build of the carpets and Bredli's, because they are very similar.
I was very excited to see a couple Bredli's for sale, because I do prefer their look over the carpets. I love the deep brick reds adult Bredli's can show, and I'm hoping my girl matures to that nice color.

    Little update: SHE HAS MITES
ugh. This was my first and will be my last reptile show purchase. I've never had a snake with mites before and I don't have anything to deal with it. (shame on me!). I fed her her second fuzzy tonight, and saw little black bugs on her.

So for tonight I'm soaking her in water for a half hour, cleaning EVERYTHING she's ever even looked at out, and picking up something for the mites tomorrow. Thank heavens she's apart from the rest of the collection, and she's the one I feed/clean last.

I'm researching how to deal with mites right now.

    Bummer

Oddly enough my first Bredl's had mites too. Make sure you check around her eyes when treating her, mites like to get into that soft skin in the eye socket on carpets. Don't be too discouraged about buying from shows though, just pay attention to who you are buying from, practice good quarantine and you'll be fine.

    They are and they aren't..

Their common name is "Centralian carpet python".

Their current species name is Morelia Bredli (hence "bredl's python")

I believe they were once considered a subspecies of Morelia Spilota, or what most people refer to as "carpet pythons", but were redesignated at some point.

I feel confident that diamond carpet pythons in particular also probably deserve their own species designation with regards to coastal/jungle/etc varieties of spilota.. but I'd still call them carpet pythons.

Calling a bredli python is like calling a corn snake a rat snake. There is the generic term "rat snake" that includes corn snakes, and then there are particular common names like "texas rat snake" that refer to specific species.
