    Re: Best Disinfectant

I use diluted Chlorhexidine in a spray bottle to clean snake tubs.

For rat/mice tubs/cages I use a water, bleach, and vinegar solution. I believe it is: 1 Gallon Water, 1 oz Bleach, 1 oz Vinegar. Works great and gets rid of bad smells. I also put it into a spray bottle. After I use it, I let it air dry before rinsing down, contact time is important when using any disinfectant.

I've also heard of using non-scented baby wipes, but have not tried it myself.

I read dish detergents should not be used because they leave behind residues.

Chlorhex is a great low-toxicity disinfectant.

However, for quarantine bins and cages up to 1 year, use BLEACH. Chlorhex does NOT kill some of the most dangerous viruses.

Except bleach is pretty toxic and you have to make sure there is no trace of the bleach left over after you clean.

Obviously bleach is good for a nice thorough clean, but for day to day cleaning, chlorhexidine is where its at.

    Re: Best Disinfectant

Hands down a 10% bleach solution left to air dry will kill pretty much anything you can throw at it. We only do this sort of heavy duty disenfection on baby racks, quarintine racks, egg tubs, water bowls, when we change animals in a tub and once or so a year on the big girls. Normally on an as needed general cleaning basis we use blue clorahexi to spray out and wipe down tubs. We let it air dry as well before adding substrate back into the container. If blue clorahexi can't get the job done the tub gets scrubbed.

Question wasn't best 'day to day' cleaner.
    The question was best disinfectant.
Bleach is the best disinfectant, symantics aside.

    What does Chlorohexadine NOT kill?

I am just curious because one of my girls has an RI and she is quarentined from the others. I want to make sure I scrub her tub, bowl, and my rack down real good. I use Chlorohex for everyday cleaning and love the stuff but I guess I will use 10% bleach on her tub and her rack slot just in case. When I was using 10% bleach on everyday/week cleanings, I could still smell a strong bleach smell a few days later, thats why I swtiched to Chlorohexadine.
