Tarantula Questions?
Hi,
I've gotten extremely interested in Tarantulas, but I can't find much information about them. If anyone could answer these questions for me, or provide some good websites, or care sheets, that would be awesome.
I'm interested in (the beginner tarantulas):
•
◦Mexican Redleg
◦Mexican Red Knee
◦Mexican Blonde
◦Costa Rican Zebra
I plan on getting a four slot rack for them, each tarantula to a slot. I was planning on using 41 quart tubs (the reason for this is because it makes snakes feel more secure, I would imagine it would be for tarantulas, too) for each tarantula.
Here are my questions:
1. Would a 41 quart be okay for each tarantula? Or is it to small (I can get a 56 quart tub, too)?
2. Are there any good care sheets for the species previously mentioned?
3. Can I have them in tubs without lids (it works for snakes)?
4. Would a rack be okay for them?
Thanks if you can answer,
~ Mackenzie

Or would a 15, 28, or 34 quart tub be better?

Re: Tarantula Questions?
Some people keep their adult T's in critter keepers or 5 to 10 gallon tanks for adults for the ones you picked. So a 41 qt tub is over kill IMO. 12 qt to 15 qt is better.
There are good caresheets for them but I am on my phone at the moment.
You could have them in tubswithout lids if they are in a rack. You could also use the tub itself with the lid on it and secure the lid down if you wanted.
Yes you could keep them in a rack. Generaly no heat is required unless the room gets really cold then back heat could be used but you need to be careful.

Re: Tarantula Questions?
i agree that 41 qt is overkill.
i dont see why a rack wouldnt be alright. but since they can climb almost any surface i would want a tub with a lid.
heres a few things i can throw in
i feed mine superworms-crickets-lizards (i throw 1 super worm in a day, even if they burrow in the bark she ends up gettin it)
heating is not needed as long as your room is not much below room temp. i keep mine ina closet room that varies with the outside temp but stays from 70-90 at coldest and hottest (not extended periods of time)
rooms humidity should also suffice.
in all there relatively low maintenance animals, not to needy and in my opinion husbandry doesnt need to be as precise as snakes (but then again snakes husbandry doesnt need to be exact either. around is alright )

Re: Tarantula Questions?
Good call on keeping the lids on when using a rack!!! I wasn't even thinking. If the tarantula is on the ceiling when you slide the tub out you could hurt it really bad and possibly kill it.

Re: Tarantula Questions?
I'll probably just use 15 quart tubs.
Also, when talking about tubs, I meant so that the shelf above the tub covers the tub, like a lid. Would that be fine?

no like we were saying if the T is on the top of the shelf and you slide out the tub it could hurt and possibly kill the T

Enclosure depends on species too. Any of the tree dwelling species benefit alot from height. I like to show off my Ts so I use 5.5g tanks, but if you want to do it econoically, the rubbermaid cereal container with the screw on lids work GREAT!
