Can I bring my BP outside?

    Hi everyone,

With the warm weather upon us i was wondering if it is ok to bring my new ball outside for short amounts of time. Can I let him roam in the grass, is that safe?

    Thanks for the info!

Re: Can I bring my BP outside?

    Things to worry about...
Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, parasites, neighbors who hate snakes, roaming dogs or cats, your attention wandering just long enough to lose him, him finding a small hole to slide into(mole hole? pipe?).

Also, snakes don't necasarily 'enjoy' going out into a strange open brightly lit environment to roam around. It could very well be stressful to him as he thinks something might be about to eat him, or a bird might swoop down to snatch him up, we have to remember they have teeeny brains and instinct for them is to stay hidden and safe.

All that aside.. if you think you can guarentee to your satisfaction that the area is safe from hazards and you can oversee it properly during the time out and that you can reasonably judge stress for your snake, it's your choice whether to take him outside or not.

I've taken my snakes out for photo ops in sunlight. I've also taken some out a long time ago to let them roam, thinking that perhaps they would enjoy it. After doing this a couple times I decided they were just trying to find a spot to hide, and stopped bringing them out. When I take one out for photos, I give them a quick wash afterwards just in case some sort of spray might have drifted over to the yard from a neighbor.

Over the years i've found that my snakes enjoy a little roaming at night ... you might want to give it a try ... again know your grounds and all the hazards that wolfy-hound mentioned ... In your yard , if you have one, would be a great place especially if you know it like the back of your hand. Happy herping

Re: Can I bring my BP outside?

Thanks for the input everyone! I do have my own yard where I feel it would be safe for him to roam a little under very strict supervision. We do have a lot of bunnies and squirrels in our yard so I worry a little about what types of parasites may be in the grass due to them, so I'm thinking maybe it would be a safer idea to keep him inside. Also, he is still fairly new to me, so if I do decide to bring him out, I will wait a little longer as to not stress him out.

Thanks again! It is so helpful to be able to come here and ask opinons from fellow herp owners, I dont know what I would do without this place!
