Couple Qs for all you breeders

I'm thinking about breeding in the future. I have two normals(as far as I know) that my boyfriend bought on a whim without knowing anything about them. It was the best move for the snakes because they were terribly sick with RIs, mouth rot, rat bites, etc., and needed vet care badly. I want to breed them just because I love this hobby and want more but don't really want to spend any money. Yes I'm cheap! It will be a long time before I do breed. I haven't even built an incubator yet. They are up to size however.

I know most breeders keep their snakes in rack systems without hides. I keep my guys in tubs that are not in a rack and they both have a cat litter pans for a hide because they cruise a lot without one.

1: What do you do when you are breeding snakes that need hides? Should I give them some tough love and get them used to not having a hide now, or should I get a bigger hide that will both be able to fit in?

2: When you introduce a male to a female (or the other way around) you are putting them into a new enclosure, so will they become stressed or will they be too occupied?

3: Does it make a difference on which snake gets moved? Like putting the female in with the male instead of putting the male in with the female?

I want to go about it while causing them a limited amount of stress because they really have been through enough.

None of mine have hides unless they are a hatchling or juvenile. Once they hit 500+ grams I yank the hides. The hides are really only for the young ones because they tend to be finicky eaters. If you really want you can leave the hide in, I don't see how it would make a difference, but if you can take it out, I would consider it. You can put black construction paper on the tub to block out the light on three sides.

I always move the male to the female's tub. That way it causes the least amount of stress to her. The males can get over it, they are too busy thinking about other things. And no, don't put them in a new enclosure. The smells of the female help entice the male, especially a fresh shed-still in the enclosure.

I meant that the enclosure will be new to him if that makes sense... And thanks, i'll be nixing his hide once I get a few more meals in him since he just went back on feed after an 8 month fast. Hers will be gone tonight after feeding time!

Good idea on the incubator, I made the mistake of waiting to the last minute hoping she would lay later on then expected, but laid sooner.

    1. I don't know how you have your tubs set up in the room, but I never liked just having a tub out in the open with all sides exposed. Try stacking them and putting a towel over them giving it a rack feel only having the front exposed to the room. This will make the whole enclosure act as a hide and give them comfort, although some do prefer a hide and feed better as a result. SOMETIMES. I have 2 snakes right now that do this. If you notice them going off feed put it back in until breeding time. Then remove and let them do their thing.

    2. They will be fine in terms of being stressed. I usually only leave my male in with a female for 2 days at a time, and then let him have a day or two to relax. With my boy though, he's a breeding machine and doesn't ever take meals in between and just cruises his cage until I put him in with a girl. Be careful with overbred males as they can lose weight quickly which can lead to a decline in health with the animal.

    3. I personally add the male to female. I'm pretty sure most do this too. Easier to keep track of too if you have a larger breeding project. Usually in a rack the male will go down a tier every couple of days until he reaches the bottom. And repeats this until ovulation is witness or when female shows no sign of wanting to breed.

Good luck with breeding, this is actually my first season and I'm having a blast! Its like christmas all over again. Wait till you get the itch even more and start collecting morphs lol

if they eat fine without the hides then id say you could get away without using them, however i do have some adults that can be very picky eaters if they dont have a hide. its not jsut a size/age thing. its 100% about the snakes comfort and stress level

    Husbandry is correct
Ambient: 85-85 Cool Side 90-92 Hot side
    Humidity: 55-70%

They were taken to the vet the day we got them (about a year ago). They're both healthy and were eating consistently until about November of last year, both are back on feed.

I tried removing the hides for feeding time last night, got the first refusal from both of them since they went back on feed :/

Not sure what I'm going to do about this but for now they both have their hides because I don't wanna put them back off feed so soon after going back on.

What do you do for the ones that need their hide when it comes time to breed?

    Hi,

I have a couple with hides in their tubs - I just remove the hides when putting the male in (or whichever way I'm pairing ) and put them back in when I take him out.

I do not offer food while they are paired up of course.

So do they cruise around or are they only interested in each other?
