    Weird eating pattern

My leopard gecko Sol, has been eating weirdly lately. She went on a type of fast and would only eat crickets a few times a week. When I purchased her she was around 20g or so. She now weighs in at 28-29g. All of the sudden last week she began eating mealworms again with great enthusiasm. She came rushing out of her hide to get them when I put them in. Temperature has not changed and her environment has not changed. So it wasn't a winter thing. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the world of Leo's.
They do these things, and many others, just to make us nuts. It's a skill they have been honing since they were brought into the pet trade. They have it down to a science now.

Some are funny like that. I have one now that does this too me all the time. She flip flops between eating super worms and crickets. She is eating super worms now but I am waiting for the day that always comes when I put the super worm in and she just turns her nose up at it. That usually means she she is done with the super worms and wants to start eating crickets again

At what size can you begin giving them superworms? She is 29g. (she is gaining weight slowly but surely) She was 19g when I got her last summer.

    Re: Weird eating pattern

Depending on the size of the supers, any age. If you can get small supers then they are no problem at all for a small Leo really. Since they are long and skinny it's not such a worry about size (like a cricket or roach would be), I just wouldn't try a 3" super on a week old Leo though
I get my supers at PetSmart (I know, but it's close) and always look at them first, some containers are full of big fat ones and some are full of smaller ones...I get the fat ones! I can't recall the name of the online worm place right now but they sold them in sizes, if you wanted to try that route.
Use your judgment but remember it's OK to go bigger than you think it is...

Haha, I work at Petsmart, Yesterday some of the superworms chewed their way out of their plastic containers. It was fun stuff having to switch them to new containers. I was considering raising them if my leo could eat them. Would my girl, at her size, be able to take the big fat ones? I still have her on small crickets (not pinheads, but smalls).

    Re: Weird eating pattern

Pick up some 'medium' sized supers and try her on those...I honestly don't recall how big my guys were when they started taking on the huge monster supers. Look through the containers and find one that is mostly small to medium, give them a shot and go from there.
Once your Leo 'crunches' the worm she will swallow it 'the long way' so there really isn't too much to worry about as the worms, even the big ones, are slender.
