She prefers to be UNDER the substrate.

Need some advice. Just got my bp today and she seems to prefer to be underneath the substrate. My initial guess was she's searching for the UTH. I removed some substrate (aspen) because I do believe I had a little bit too much at first. But she still continues to spend time underneath the aspen substrate. I don't think heat is the reason, cuz she'll do it on both the hot and cool side.

Any ideas why?

BPs are occasionally burrowing snakes. So dont stress, just make sure you have a thermostat on your UTH and make sure it doesn't get too hot!

No worries, but again, make sure temps aren't too hot on the surface of the viv where the UTH is. These snakes are EXTREMELY lazy and will not move sometimes even if it is too hot. Pay attention to its belly to see if it starts to look almost wrinkled or sort of pink, then you would know your heat is a little high.

As long as the temp right on the glass where the UTH is under the substrate is not higher then 95* (measured with a digital thermometer with a probe) then she will be just fine.

Since she is a new snake, you are going to see a lot of roaming and cruising for the next week or so. She is testing the limits of her new enclosure looking for a weak spot. She will check every single point in the cage multiple times until she is sure there is no way out. Then she will settle into her hides.

In short: Don't worry about it, she won't do it forever.
