    Blood Behind BP's Eye

Tonight when i walked into my room to check on my snake a notice a small red spot behind his eye. I'm assuming its blood. Hes just about to shed, his eyes have been clear now 1 or 2 days so i think he'll be shedding really soon. Could it just be a scratch from trying to start the skin coming off? He's never shed for me before so i don't really know. How should a treat him?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Could you get a picture? I have never heard of something like this. I would not recommend messing with it at all. Their eyes can be very delicate and often more harm comes from messing with the eyes.

If there really is blood behind the eye and it doesn't go away with this upcoming shed, I would see a vet.

So i woke up this morning to find a balled up skin. This being the first time i've gone through a shed cycle, is that normal for the skin to be all scrunched up? Anyway i unraveled a perfect snake skin but the head end was a bit wet so it was hard to unravel and a ripped it before i could check the head, so i'm not sure if his eyecaps came off. Should I Be worried?

Kaorte, what do you think of the picture, is it blood? it's still there after he shed, should i take him to the vet

    Thanks for you help!

Looks to me like the eye caps shed off. It kinda looks like a mouse or rat inflicted wound. Do you feed live? If you do, do you supervise the feeding?

Cool, i'm glad the eye caps came of. Yes i feed live and i do supervise, but i haven't fed him in about a week and a half because of his shedding, and the wound just happened within the time i went out friday night till the time i came back around 6 hours later

    Thanks,
    Mike

Anything in the cage he could have bumped into too hard? Corners? Pointy? Sounded like it was inside his eye at first.

It appears to be just a fleshwound, so there's not really anything you can do but put some sort of antibacterial ointment on it. NO PAINKILLER.

Can anybody tell me WHY no painkiller? It's always the advice, but I've never seen why.

The pain killer is meant for humans, it would be a sort of over-dose for a ball python. Second, the medication is just not healthy, nor needed for them.
    Hope that helps!

To OP, keep an eye on it, treat it well, should go away. And yes, it is normal for them to shed in balls that unravel like socks.

During the shedding process, the first thing they do is try to split the skin on the head. Have you watched the shedding process? It's all about pushing off and onto things.

It looks like while he was shedding, he pushed against something that could have given him that gash.

Your vet, for a few dollars more than a tube of unmedicated poly or neosporin, will sell you an excellent antibiotic called silver sulfadiazine.

No, I haven't watched the process, but the cut showed up the night before i found the shed. Is it safe to say it came from him trying to start shedding?

    Thanks Again!
