Re: So SB 318 passed? :(
Looks that way! A copy of the bill is here: http://www.floridaanimallaws.org/sb_318.pdf
For those who have any of the following animals, it looks like if you get a permit before July 1st (or already have one) then you're safe.
Sorry to hear about this. My municipal laws ban any snakes over 2 feet (lol) so it could definately be worse. Lets just hope that they don't start adding all kinds of rediculous animals to category #7!
" (2)(a) No person, firm, or corporation shall keep, possess,
import into the state, sell, barter, trade, or breed the
following species for personal use or for sale for personal use:
1. Burmese or Indian python (Python molurus).
2. Reticulated python (Python reticulatus).
3. African rock python (Python sebae).
4. Amethystine or scrub python (Morelia amethystinus).
5. Anaconda (Eunectes).
6. Nile monitor (Varanus niloticus).
7. Any other reptile designated as a reptile of concern by the commission.
(b) However, if a person holds a permit issued before July
1, 2010, pursuant to subsection (1) to legally possess a species
listed in paragraph (a), that person may possess the individual
reptile for the remainder of that reptile’s life. Any person who
possesses an anaconda, other than a green anaconda (Eunectes
murinus), and who meets the required criteria must obtain a
permit pursuant to subsection (1) by October 1, 2010, in order
to keep that anaconda for the remainder of its life.
Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2010."

Re: So SB 318 passed? :(
Wow....well hopefully they acknowledge that on the news or something! I dont see how many people will know about the permit unless they're surfin the web. Although, I guess they aren't gonna go raiding peoples homes in search of them so I would assume that people could "get away" with having them without the permit to some extent. This is still very sad.
Does this make it easier for the Federal bills to pass?

Re: So SB 318 passed? :(
Same thing happened where I live. Only it took 1 burmese python to escape to pass a bill. People who currently owned them, were able to obtain a permit to keep them because it was some sort of "Grandfather Clause".
There was a burmese python stretched out on a wall getting some sun and people freaked out. Took about a 2 months for the ban to be put in place.

It's interesting to say that "it took 1 burmese python to escape."
I may point out that it is believed that the south Florida basilisk population stems from seven escaped individuals from an airport.
Just sayin'.

Not sure what your point is. I may point out that "I live in Canada, where we have whats called snow and -30 degree celsius weather" so if you are implying that it would survive, highly unlikely!
Just sayin'.

Re: So SB 318 passed? :(
It was bound to happen. Florida is the one place in the continental US that actually has established populations of reptiles.
Hawaii is the only other US state I can think of that has non-native reptile issues and they already have extremely restrictive laws.

Frankly, I hope this will satisfy them and there will be no need for a national law.

I didn't realize you were from Canada.
I meant to say it does not take many escapes to form a population.
BTW, Texas also has invasives - geckos and anoles.
