    Food Mix

I want to make him a little mix of stuff to eat, so here's some stuff that I found that 'might' be OK?

Roasted peanuts (With or without shell, or no peanuts at all?)
Original Sunflower Seeds (The David's brand, is that OK to feed?)
    Ritz crackers
    Carrots
Rice Krispies and/or Frosted Flakes (Are those OK to feed?)

That's all that I found in my house that I thought would be fine, I haven't made it yet but I want some opinions first on what to take out and stuff.

When I bred my own rats for feeders, the food I gave them had almonds and sunflower seeds in it. I'm sure they were unsalted and unflavored, so I don't know if it would hurt them. I gave them fresh carrots as well, and they seemed to like it.

Yeah I heard the fresh carrots were best to feed, are there any other vegetables or fruits they'd like? I think I've got some strawberries in the fridge, but I don't know if my rat will eat it or not.

    Re: Food Mix

Carrots are good, ritz crackers are good in moderation, my girls like sunflower seeds(as long as their unsalted).

Ive heard to NEVER feed peanuts to ratties. Also, rice crispies and frosted flakes have waayy to much sugar in them to be healthy. Its good to give cheerios instead. Here is a link to what is good and bad for rats to eat. i live by this guide lol..

I also highly reccomend joining this forum^^^ they are as helpful with ANY questions you have as the people are on here.

there is stuff called Suebees mix. its great for them(as long as you dont overfeed it), n easy to make. http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html

One thing that is pretty much needed for all rats is Harlan lab block. its got everything that a rattie needs all in little blocks. i bought 15lbs of it...LOL. make sure u ask around on the forum what kind your boy should be eating. its different depending on age. Just make sure to ask any questions you have on that forum.

    Cheers

    Re: Food Mix

My daughter's first pet was a hairless rat. We had her for almost 3 years. She was put to sleep because of cancer at the ripe old age of 2 years and 10 months old.

Ratt HATED rodent chow. It was offered everyday but I also gave her the "pretty bird" extruded feed mixed with alittle of the mixed dried fruit, nuts and seed mix for the large hookbills. She also was given warmed frozen mixed veges a couple times a week and the occasional pasta, rice or other bland tidbit from dinner. She was an awesome pet.

I think that the sodium levels in the crackers and nuts needs to be monitered and the cereal is pretty high in sugar. But Ratt is the only pet rat I have ever had so I don't have lots of experience and the rats we keep now are feeders so they eat Mazuri 6F Rodent chow.

    Re: Food Mix

Feeding RAW peanuts is bad, or if they are salted. That being said, there is pretty much nothing the ratties love more than in shell, roasted, salt free peanuts. They are a healthy choice, but contain a lot of protein, so feed in moderation as a treat.

Ritz Crackers should only be fed in very light moderation as they aren't the most healthy snack.

Rice Crispies are a fine choice, frosted flakes contain a little too much sugar but they are fine.

David's brand UNSALTED Sunflower seeds are great.

You can buy frozen mixed veggies and frozen fruit for cheap at the super market. They make an excellent treat.

Salt isn't deadly to them, just isn't very healthy.
