Can babies be seen when candling?
My eggs are 5 weeks old today. I just candled them and the veins look great. Yet the only other thing I can make out is a solid type mass at the bottom I assume its the yolk as it looks like a water line in a bowl.

I candle pretty often and every now and then you will get a faint image of the head and eyes. I also saw the spider pattern one time. It is possible but the angle has to be just right.

Yes, at certain points you can see the babies in the egg, sometimes see patterns, and you can see them moving around inside the egg too.
I took some videos and uploaded them to youtube because I thought it was the most awesome thing ever to be able to see baby snakes and tegus inside the eggs.

Re: Can babies be seen when candling?
Sure! At around the 30 day mark (I think it was?) I could make out bodies moving in eggs last year. I have better luck actually seeing and recognizing them in corn eggs, though.

Re: Can babies be seen when candling?
Absolutely. At day 30-32, you can start to make out pattern (I have actually been successful at ID'ing Pins, Spiders and Spinners). Around day 40 or so colors start to come in, and I have successfully candled things like Pieds, Albinos, Hypos, Pewters, Cinnies and Mojaves(although the last two also use some pattern anomolies to ID them). It takes a little practice, but most morphs can be ID'd from candling by day 42. I have never been able to make IDs on Axanthics or Enchis, and most of the time Pastels are not a positive.
Hope that helps,

Thanks everyone, so my question now is if I can't make out anything other than veins and a mass at the bottom. Does this mean I have no babies?

Not necessarily. It can be hard to discern what's what through the eggshell. I've had the best luck candling them at night with lights off. Moving the penlight across the egg shell can sometimes get them to move away from the light. As they get bigger and fill in the void in the egg it's harder to detect form and movement, though.

If theirs veins then theirs going to be babies! Some times you just can't see them, you have to catch them at the right time. Also I would think depending on the morph you might not be able to see a snake. Like a Bel since they are white with no pattern it would be almost impossible to see them in the egg.
