Johnson stat and economy rack
SO I ordered a johnson t stat to go along with my economy rack I am having temp reading discrepancies the probe from the thermostat says 95, i put it in the notch which is cut out in the back that goes under the tub. I put a temp prob inside and under the hide and it reads 100 which do I go off?
I turned down the stat so i would get a reading on the thermometer of 94. so now the thermostat reads 89, I guess the positioning gives it a 5 degree difference. based on the heat being trapped under hide.
I think i need a heat gun!!!

Well the temps should be lowere than the temps in the heat tape due to heat loss, but I've read this happen to other people too, which is weird. But I would try to get a temp gun first and try that out.
Also do you know if the thermostat is set to a differential of "1" instead of something higher?

First thing is check and see what your temperature differential is set at. That is a range that the thermostat will go above and below the set temp. Johnson calls it the "set point value". If you still have the instruction book the directions are on the bottom of page 4. Also check and see if the probe is actually against the flexwatt or is there a gap between the two. It should be touching it so it can directly monitor the temps of the flexwatt. If it is touching it, make sure it is secure. You might need to use some aluminum tap or something to hold it in place. That's all I can think of for now...

I have my Herpstat set to 89 degrees. The Flexwatt reads 95ish with a temp gun. The hot spot in the tubs read 89-90.
It's weird. I never figured out why it does that, but I fiddled with it until it worked.

You cannot use a temp gun directly on flexwatt because the temp gun is based off a laser and the surface of the flexwatt is reflective.
Use a piece of newspaper over the flexwatt or a piece of tape that is not reflective and point your gun at that.

Hide boxes will retain heat especially if the heat is coming up from underneath. I don't generally go by the temperature on the thermostat, I measure the temps with a thermometer or temp gun and then adjust the thermostat up or down depending on what the actual temps are where the snake is going to be. I've got some of my thermostats set to over 100 to maintain a hot spot in the low 90's

Is this true?? I thought it would just read the first surface it reflects off...

Really? I didn't realize that. Does the same go for the PE1? (It doesn't have a laser). This is a huge relief.

I dont know about the PE1, how does it work if it's not laser based? I though all temp guns were laser based, if not I guess like the saying goes; "you learn something new everyday..."
Temp guns based on lasers will not give you an accurate reading if the surface you are trying to read is reflective, since some of the laser will bounce off somewhere else.
At least this is what I learned. If Im wrong someone feel free to correct me

Apparently the PE1 uses Infrared.. Would the same apply to this then? I am not completely sure how it works..
