Dumeril's Boas/Carpet Pythons/SD Retics?
I have been looking for a snake to add to my collection (I won't be getting it for a long time, I just want to plan and research), and I seem to like the Dumeril's Boa, Super-Dwarf Reticulated Pythons, and Carpet Pythons the best!
However, because I am such a complicated person , I want one that is laid back, sweet, docile, nice to hang out with, and just a good snake all over. I would like it to be around eight feet (male or female), and not a thousand dollars each.
Which do you prefer? Which one do you suggest?
* And for Dumeril's Boa owners... Does that 20 pounds of muscle scare you?
Cheers (again),
Mackenzie
*~! Edit !~*
I would like one that has the personality most like a ball python (my ball python is such a sweetie!), but I want it to be larger. Small snakes like corn snakes freak me out (they are so tiny!), and I've always liked bigger snakes, I just don't want to jump into actual Reticulated Pythons and Burmese Pythons... I just want a large snake that is sweet

In my other thread I was just looking for ideas, now I just want to see which 'big' but small snakes every body prefers. I was wondering what the personalities were, and what peoples' personal experiences with them are

get a boa constrictor! i have a nicaraguan boa male who will only get around 5-6 feet. common males get 6-8 and females 7-10ish. super laid back, good feeders. ive read that sd retics have an additude, as do some carpets. my next snake will more than likely be a carpet, but im still on the fence. i love my bci tho!

I'm looking at them now They seem pretty hard to find... the actual Nicaraguan BCI's... The most popular ones are the cross-breeds. Do you have any experience with the Colombian BCI's?

Trust me get a boa constrictor- large, laid back and hardy. In my personal opinion, carpets can be a bit nippy and have a super nasty bite when they get larger. However, they are stunning, especially some of the new morphs that are available. From what I have heard from SD retic owners is that they can either be sweet or aggressive, but always come with an extreme feeding response- basically same insight as normal retics! I have no experience with Dumerils. You can purchase and "create", if you will, by proper handling and through time, very tame individuals of the species you mentioned, but in general, boa constrictors, BCC or BCI, are laid back. I have kept many species of snakes and for anybody who wants a larger but sweet snake they are always what I recommend. However there is also something to be said for individuality. I have one female BCI who would just as soon bite me as look at me, an amazingly sweet green anaconda, and a ball python who thinks he's a cobra. I hope this helped and sorry if it didn't. Basically, all snakes are individuals but in general, a BCC or BCI will make a wonderful, laidback and impressive snake.

Re: Dumeril's Boas/Carpet Pythons/SD Retics?
My one and only coastal carpet python is named Kitty, and she is every bit as sweet as her name implies. The first week I had her she would hiss and puff if I disturbed her, but once she got over the post-shipping jitters, she quickly became the sweetest and best-handling snake I've ever experienced. The general saying with carpet pythons is that 'babies are generally nippy but will settle down very nicely as they age'.
Carpet pythons are NOT BPs though. They won't just sit in your lap and do nothing while you watch TV for an hour. They're fairly active and aware, and while they don't move fast, they do constantly move.
If you've narrowed it down to dumerils, carpets, and SD 'tics, I'd say they're all great choices, and all fairly different snakes. I've met nippy ones of all 3 species and I've met easily handled ones of all species.
I agree with Al that BCIs and BCCs are great snakes too, and if you're considering Dumerils, I'd keep those on the 'possible' list too.

Re: Dumeril's Boas/Carpet Pythons/SD Retics?
Dumeril's boas do really make wonderful pets, my girl is about 6 feet long and is an overall big sweetheart.
Dumeril's are very docile, calm, sweet, and very very beautiful. They are my favorite species of snake and do really make awesome pets for a semi-large snake. My girl is only 13lbs, and not really hard to handle. I would assume a 20lb Dumeril's would be one huge female.
I would consider getting a baby to start out with and watch it grow. They take some time to grow their big size, but it's always nice starting with a baby to get it used to you and having that same baby, but as a very big baby LOL.
Carpet pythons get a nice size as adults and do make pretty good pets. As babies, most can be nippy, but some eventually grow out of it with or without handling.
I plan on getting a JCP soon, since I love their adult size and beautiful coloration. I've held probably two carpet pythons in my life, and Irian Jaya and a Jaguar (held the Jag yesterday!), and they aren't too bad with handling. The Irian Jaya wasn't used to it and it was a good 4-5 feet LOL, I didn't get nailed though.
SD Retics I don't have much experience with, but from what I've heard they are just like normal Retics, just come in a very small package. They are pretty cool though, and I'm sure with any snake if you handle them enough they will become a great pet.
Have you ever considered getting a Boa constrictor (BCI)? They make awesome pets and my boy cracks me up all the time because he's just very different from any snake I've owned. They are a very docile species and are a good first semi-large pet to get into.
I'm all in for Dumeril's, and they seem to be becoming a much more popular snake. They do make awesome pets so I would totally suggest one. Their only downside is finicky eating, but you can get them out of that with time and patience. Whatever you choose, good luck with it
