    Re: new sav owner questions

You'll need a basking spot of around 110F-120F and the humidity should be around 40%-50% from what I've read. Maybe someone else can shine on in here and correct me if needed

    Re: new sav owner questions

i was in your boat a few weeks ago when i got my first sav. Ive done a crap load of reading since then (and had done about 2 months worth of research for the water i had gotten the week before) and have gotten alot of help on here. Here are a few things that seem to be a general concensus

~ elevated basking spots work better, allows for the 120+ basking spot on the very very top and still hot, but cooler than basking spot temps. I know my sav which is also still a baby like to hang out right around the 105* level in his setup. While he still does use the 120* spot, its more in the early early morning to warm up completely, or right after he has eaten.

~ambient temps of at least 80* in the cool side during the day, and at all times during the night. my monitors never get a break from the temps, i go from 100w day bulbs to 100w red lights at night, i also have a few places they can hide on the cool side incase they are too hot

~a water tub they can completely submerge themselves in, that gets changed daily! youd be amazed at how much dirt and poo ends up in there in 12 hours lol

~ make sure your insect feeders are dusted with calcium WITH vitamin d3, if your using a UVB light you can pry use a little less D3 cuz it will help them produce it naturally

~ you can never have enough substrate. I know baby savs are little, but mine has burried about 5" deep in a total of 8" of substrate.

What are you using for substrate? to monitor temps/humidity? how big is the cage overall? I know you said 29 gallon, but is it a fish or reptile ment tank? How much of the top is covered to hel keep humidity in?

sorry not trying to seem overbearing, but as i learned with my guys, monitor keepers are a very stern (yet loving and forgiving) bunch. The more information you give, and the more research you appear to have done, the more detailed and lengthy your answers will be instead of short less informative answers you will recieve. Mumps and slayer have probably helped me the most, and they seem to post in the early morning (at least pacific time) so if you can get a detailed list of everything with your setup, they can help you dial it in and be perfect.

BTW where are pics of your little guy?

    JLuck13, you're catching on!

    Good advice.

To the OP; is mealworms the only food you have available? Try to get some variety in there with crickets, pinks, etc.

Other than that, pics will help and everything JLuck13 said; especially the basking spot of 120F +.
