First off, welcome to bp.net

If you spend some time browsing the forums here you'll get some great stories. Check out the care sheet http://ball-pythons.net/modules/Sect...warticle&id=59 that should give you a lot of information.

What book do you have? There are a lot of older books that are full of old, out of date information. There are a few new books I can certainly recommend.

Balls are great snakes and are very hardy as long as you give them their proper requirements.

some times their eating habits can test your patience or even shake up your nerves to say the least. once you can get past that and understand what is going on they are great snakes to keep. very easy to keep, very hardy, and very rewarding. royals are generally very friendly snakes.

Reading a book is a great start to learning about ball pythons but it doesn't end there! Everyone has different ideas on their care! Read as many things as you can and determine the best care for your snake! I am glad to hear that you are educating yourself before getting one! This is a great place to get all kinds of info!

Even when you think you know everything about your snake, they will throw a curve ball at you to keep you on your toes. I swear sometimes they do it on purpose.

People say they're good beginner snakes because they're docile and they don't grow too large. They have very specific husbandry requirements which may require a bit of tweaking to get right, otherwise, they may not eat, or they may shed poorly, or they may stress out or they may get sick and die.

IMO, a good beginner snake is a corn snake or a milk snake. Ball pythons take a bit more work.
