I HAD to make her feel small

So me and a friend went into petsmart to look around. In there tank they had a small BP that looked disgusting. It wes wrinkled all the way down and the last half looked more like a triangle then a snake. Add on the snake looked dehydrated and had what looked like 2 sheds worth of skin still on. Ohh and to top it off they had the temp about 100 AND NO HUMIDITY. So I see some one and ask for a manager. She informs me that shes the manager. So I take her over and show her. She tells me she doesnt know alot about reptiles (atleast she admits it).
I ask her that not knowing alot about herps does that look like a healthy snake. She says no and that shell talk to the department manager. I then see some one who works in that section and she grabs her manager. To me these two should know atleast something. So I point out everything I see. The regular worker looks at the fans and says that they are on. I tell her that while they may be on it is still WAY too hot and they are cooking the snake. I start getting annoyed at the lack of care and politly rip into them. They tell me thet they have been trying to soak it but its been hard (Im callin BS) and that its a problem eater. By this point the manager looks like shes about to cry and like im a district manager or somethin threatining her job. So finaly I ask what happens when they cant sell em cus of the condition and she tells me they adopt em out. I give her my info if they cant sell it Ill take it. She tells me I would have to pay for all the vet bills to get it better like it would stop me.
I tell her thats not a problem. Now I just have to figure out if I should go back tomorrow to see if anythings been done.

Good for you wanting to help the poor creature!! But unfortunately, freeing up that cage by adopting it, will only allow another one to suffer in its place.

Hopefully your talking to the mgr, and her willingness to listen, and the concern she showed, will aid in improving the conditions.

As for temp, etc. I've explained to our local pet places how inaccurate those stick-on or analog thermometers are. I know they use them, and sell them b/c they're cheap, but I try to make it a point to demonstrate how poorly they measure the heat and humidity.

Hopefully the little guy will get the love and attention he deserves, and will make a full recovery!!!

Don't bother complaining to people in the store. Call the customer service number or use the website feedback form to complain. Complaints to corporate get better results.

Re: I HAD to make her feel small

Unfortunately, the only way to really get pet stores to stop selling reptiles is to stop buying them (or 'adopting' them).
What needs to happen, and I know this sounds harsh, is that all the sickly reptiles that are on display at these stores need to die, and when the store realizes that no one is buying them, they'll stop selling them.

This is why department stores that don't have herp educated employees, should not try to sell herps, of any kind.

IMO someone that lets a poor snake rot like that should not work with animals period. It takes 15 minutes to get the basics of an animal to help it get some basic husbandry. IMO it is total BS to blame that kind of abuse on lack of knowledge. These people work with animals for a living and should at least know 5 minutes worth of research.
