    Hot spots and lay dates.

Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while I've been a bit busy(work, work, work!). I was listening to Reptile Radio a while ago and Mark Mandic was on the show talking about hot spots and slugs(higher temps=more slugs). I decided to try his theory on lower hot spots post ovulation. I have my girls at 88 degrees right now and have recieved 3 clutches so far(I also have a girl who is about 6 days past due right now). Two of which were at 88 degree hot spots and one was at 92 degrees. The girls that have 88 degree hot spots have gonn consistently 5-7 days past due. The one that was 92 laid 28 days after POS. Who else is using lower hot spots? When are your clutches being layed?

What exactly did he say? The hotspots were lowered after or before ovulation? BG does know it will take a female longer to lay her eggs if kept at a cooler temp.

I believe he was talking about pre-Ov in order to avoid early ovulation, was he not? During post-Ov hot is fine.

Yep. Most of the breeders I've talked to that keep the girls cool pre-ovulation will bump the hot spot up to 90 after ovulation.

Maybe this explains why my girl that's ovy'd hasn't laid yet. I've kept her hot spot sitting @ 88 before and after ovy. She's currently on day 36 since prelay shed.

I've also seen/heard people say that lower temperatures can yield larger babies.

@ BG, he was talking about raising the temps after the cooling cycle. I talked with Mark a couple months back and he said he doesn't have any ovulations at the time he raises his temps back up. BTW, I just got me fourth clutch this morning, she was 6 days past due. I know 4 clutches is nothing to write history on, that's for sure. I have a couple more to go in this rack so I will see how this works out(they are all post ovy now).

I'll bet you get eggs in the next 48 hours.

I sure hope so... I've been nail biting for days now. I wake up every morning, SPRING out of bed and go check on her immediately. I can't wait!

What's the longest you've heard of a girl going passed due? This is the longest wait I've had yet... granted it's only my second clutch.. but the first girl laid them on the day after I had set. I was hoping to have the same luck this time, but that's been shot down.

Re: Hot spots and lay dates.

Our 8 clutches of blood/short tails went between 35 and 46 days in 09..
We do not provide a hot spot and only run an ambient temp..There was 146 eggs and all but one female laid nothing but fertile eggs..The one female that laid a few infertiles produced the year before and the infertiles were not your typical slugs but the funkiest eggs one ever laid eyes on..Looked like crook neck squash..
This year we have one carpet clutch todate and she went 43 days and laid 10 fertiles no slugs..
