    Trying to regulate it all

So, the spot temps I have are 91-94 on the warm side, 80-82 on the cooler side.

    -Humidity is about 63-65%.
-Daytime ambient air is about 81.
-Night time ambient air is about 78.

The question is: is the night time 78 too cool? I'm working at getting it up, but obviously there's a balance with the temp and humidity.

If I cover the tank more, (less ventilation) the humidity gets 85-90%, but the night time ambient temps are up to 81-82. To keep it at 60-70% humidity, ambient at night drops.

It's a 20 gallon glass cage, resides in the basement. The basement is conditioned with our furnace, but you know how well furnaces heat basements without zoning...anyway. I'm just wondering if the 78 deg. is a problem through the night.

I plan on insulating the outside back and sides of the tank to help with heat loss -- unless the 78 night time is ok.
Lots of BPs, and still not enough!

I would say those numbers look about perfect to me. Plus, unless you are breeding, a nighttime drop is not neccessary.

All of your temperatures sound good. Your day time ambient temperature is good, but you really don't need to drop the temperatures for night unless you are going to breed.

I don't think he is doing it on purpose. haha I think it's just that at night the temps drop and it's in the basement so the temperature drops in there accordingly.

It has been unseasonably cool here for the past month, and my night time temps have been getting down to 77-78. I haven't seen any signs of RI or even stress. As long as they have a warm spot to get to they should be fine. As it's been posted before, stay above 75 and you should be fine. Also, don't think just become your temps get a little cooler than 75 on the rare occasion your snakes will die or even get a RI.

Re: Trying to regulate it all

Thank you for the knowledge! That's good to know. Boy have I been worrying. I got this 6 yr. old 1-1/2 weeks ago. It's basically my first real pet. (Not going to count the salamander that I caught and put in the sprinkler box...he keeps himself)

Now if I can just get her to eat f/t eventually.

The importer/breeder this snake came from suggested if all else fails with the F/T, just put Gurdy (the snake) in a tight fitting tub with lid on, along with the f/t overnight (obviously vented), and she'd have it eaten by morning. Any thoughts on that?

How quickly can an RI set in/become noticeable?

I have seen that work with colubrids. Worth a shot with a BP?

Re: Trying to regulate it all

how do u heat ur tank?? if u have just a light over top u may want to start looking into under tank heaters (UTH) and a thermostat. but ur temps do seem good, i wouldnt worry unless they get below 75 for a few hours or so.

offer frozen thawed and if he doesnt take it just leave it in the warm hide over night. most times they will eat it by morning. if not just throw it away and do it again on the next feeding day. i do this all the time and it works. he may not be eating cuz of the time of year, it being 6 yrs old its prolly wanting to breed.
A room full of empty racks and thermostats that have been unplugged.
