Hmmmm, what to buy now?

After quiting the reptile hobby for a couple months, im planning on buying another reptile at an upcoming show. these are my options, and please don't be biased and give me your opinions on what i should get. I have kept leopard geckos and ball pythons before but they kind of bore me. i guess i would like something a little more exotic...these are my options.

crested gecko
white-lipped python
suriname red-tail boa
jungle carpet python

what do you guys think? what are some other interesting lizards that don't require uv?

I dream of owning a jungle carpet someday myself. They can be abit nippy I hear, I rather like that. Not terribly big but bigger than a ball.


Geckos are awful cute but lizards in general are to high maintenance for me. Turtles to even though I am always tempted when I see turtles and tortoises at a show. I tend to stick to snakes and cats.

Crested Geckos are great. My brother has two and i love watching them. I check on the a few times a day when i have time and they really are not that hard to take care of. One of the coolest things in my opinion is the bioactive environment you can make in a cresteds enclosure.

White lipped python are truly beautiful. Are you looking for a northern or southern locale? Im guessing your looking at the more common northern locale that is gold with a black head. Im not super familiar with these but i think they can tend to be nippy. They are not beginner snakes though. Jumping from balls and leos to a white lip is a little bit of a jump and is not a snake for the beginner.

As for the suriname rtb. These are on my list. If you can get a high quality suri, theres not many herps that can rival these in beauty. The stark contrast on the tails is absolutely amazing, and the deep and bright red is extremely attractive. But the thing is, are you ready for a bcc? BCCs will get bigger than BCI's. Suri's can get into the 7-9 foot range. Thats a big jump from a 3 foot ball. And you have to think about the caging required for a 7-9ft boa. A 4x2 is good until about 6 or 7 foot, but i would say a 6x2 is what you would need for an adult female or a large male.

The jungle carpets would be a great choice. The high yellows and jet blacks on a high grade jungle are amazing. Check out Sek Exotics. Steve has amazing carpets and some of the best diamonds out there. I have my jungle from him. As for carpets being nippy, they kind of get a bad rap. Hatchlings can be nippy as most species are. But once they get settled in and a little older they should be fine. A 4x2x1 is minimum for an adult in my opinion. Jungles will stay in the 5-7 foot range and will be much more slender that the BCC. They are great snakes and are on alot of peoples wish lists.

After looking at all of your considerations, i think the crestie or JCP is what would be best for you, but then again I dont truly know you and your experience. Cresties are a little more maintainence than leos, but with a bioactive substrate they can be much less maintainence. The JCP's are great and reach a perfect size for alot of people. They are great show animals with their bright colors and are easily handleable.

But in reality, it comes down to what you want. But always do alot of research before picking up a new animal.

I think they will grow their tails back as well where some others wont. That was appealing to me as well.

Then I read a care sheet. My god these things are like made to be house lizards. Friendly, talkative, Cool looking, Climbers, Perfect temps, and No UV.


Give them humidity like a BP, Tasty fruits and diet food and your good.

God unless I am missing something I may be putting one in my room soon near my compy...

Ok this needs UV but that is pretty easy. Black and White Argentine Tegu....OMG....I love those!!
