    Red Bulb Question

I have a red light for my BP enclosure for heating... Do I need to turn it off? Or does it need to be on 24hours? Current temp is 88.9 F and RH is 66%

Even if you do you may need to leave it on. It all depends on how big the enclosure is and what the ambient temps are in the room. If you turn the light off, the ambient air temps will drop even if you have a UTH. Most rooms are only 70 degrees so this will make the ambient air temps too cold.

You can probably shut it off and be OK then.

Hey...you got any Water Monitors around your house? If so, BG wants to come and visit.

We had a water monitor but we let it go... Too big and wild caught, it can't be handled...

Should I turn the lamp on from 8am-8pm? The enclosure is inside my room, and the sunlight doesnt really get in...

That would be fine. You could leave it on 24/7 but that might dry the air out too much so you need to watch that. Many people in your part of the world use no light at all with no problem even with no uth, although it's probably better to use one.

    How big was it?

I have never heard of a blue light -- I have seen purpleish heat lights.

I have used red and black heat lamps, and they are supposedly similiar to moonlight for a snake, and they can't really see them. Therefore, if you need the lamps for heat, you can use them 24/7 and should have no negative impact on the snake.

You could also look into a CHE (ceramic heat emitter). I have never used them, buy they supposedly last much longer than bulbs (therefore more expensive as well). They give off no light, just heat.

    Re: Red Bulb Question

I've only been on this forum for a few days and I can already help someone else out

I use an under the tank heating pad along with a 50 watt red bulb overhead in the middle.

I leave both of these on at ALL TIMES, even night time. The under the tank heating pad works as his hot spot, and the overhead reb bulb does a nice job of heating up the ambient air temperature.

I got a very good reading of all this by using the accurite thermometer from walmart. It costs only $12 and it comes with a probe. The unit itself measure humidity and ambient air temp while the probe measures your hot spot.

I use the 10-20 gallon UTH and 50 watt red bulb and i put them on dimmers to control their temperatures. I am at a steady 90-95 degrees for his hotspot and 78-82 degrees for his ambient air temp.

Humidity is always around 60% because I leave a very damp towel covering the right half of my tank.

So in short, YES leave the UTH and red bulb on at all times (as long as they are on dimmers to control them) and your temperatures should all be fine. Just make sure to use the wet towel on top of the tank and mist the tank every morning/afternoon a little bit.
