Re: My winter hobby
Not bad!
I would love to go fishing some time. The last time I went fishing I didn't catch anything, neither did my brother or my dad, but I found a little Red Eared Slider that I kept for 6 1/2 years. She's now happly with other sliders of her kind at the reptile sanctuary I volunteer at

Re: My winter hobby
I'm lucky I live in MN, it has some of the best managed waters for fishing in the US. Ohio isn't exactly renowned as a fishing destination, but it does have good waters.
I've never been successful at chasing catfish. The cats that we have in MN are a few types of bullheads, channel cats, and flathead cats. I still haven't hooked into my first flathead, and my biggest channel was maybe 3lbs tops. SC has some pretty great catting waters. MN does too, but I haven't figured out exactly where they are. Catfishermen here are a little tight-lipped, some even want to keep secret the fact that MN has good cat fishing.
Some year I'll get up to the red river. It's the #1 PREMIER channel kitty fishery. On a good day, you're constantly hooking up with fish in the upper teens and low 20s, with a real shot at a high 20s fish. They are big, they are fat, and they are strong.

Yeah, ohio does have some good places near like ... the ohio river. which is like 5 hours away and lake erie... but ive never caught cats there either. supposedly they are there...
I basically got into fishing for cat fishing... Well... got in as much as i have "into fishing" which isnt very far... I dont think ive caught anything on my rod I use now... Never. I have back in the day though... Then again its probably because i dont use good bait or something...
dang. Id love to catch anything lol let alot stuff in the 20s....
What do people on here fish for? Recreation, or do you eat 'em?
Or both!

Re: My winter hobby
I'm a 99% CPR fisherman (catch, photograph, release). The photo is my trophy.
I sometimes keep a couple eaters, but for fish caught in the lower 48 states and Canada, that usually only ends up being maybe 5 fish a year.
The only time I fish exclusively for eaters is salmon fishing in alaska. They are too delicious to let go, and I only get to do that one week a year usually when I visit the parents. Last year my dad and I spent 4 days fishing the silver salmon run in Cordova. The salmon that year were pretty chunky. We limited out with 3 fish each every day, for a total of 24 fish = 48 nice big wild caught silver salmon fillets. If you figure each fillet was 3lbs, we approached 150lbs of meat over those 4 days. It stocked up my parents freezer quite nicely for the year, and I got to take home a good bit to have for myself and share with friends.
That trip was also the first time I caught fish with homemade lures. I made a couple inline spinners, a very basic and common fishing lure, and caught at least one salmon on every single homemade lure I brought with me.
I am an "all species fisherman". If it swims, I'll try to catch it. Right now I'm focusing on MN gamefish and making homemade lures to catch 'em with.
Non-gamefish are always in the back of my mind however. I did quite a bit of carp and sucker fishing last season. The problem with those is I'm trying to do as much fishing as I can with homemade artificials rather than with bait.
I'll give them a go on a fly rod, since flies work great for carp and suckers, once I get some practice in learning to fly fish. I got a 4 weight rod and reel outfit for christmas that I'm going to learn to fly fish with this spring, chasing bluegills and crappies.

I like that, I dont think I would ever catch a fish just to mount... The only reason id keep it would be to eat it
haha... I guess id try to catch it, but im not going out of my way to try and catch certain things... I just want the big ones!
Id rather just stick with one fish and not worry about all the different techniques and baits... (and rods) Ive been using artificials too, but with no luck at all
ive never been fly fishing before but I have a friend who does it.. Im not sure theres any good places near me to fly fish either... :/

Re: My winter hobby
That's pretty cool. What's the stuff called that you make the final casts from? What's the process, clay or wax sculptures to make molds, then cast the final rubber from the molds? I have a few ideas for soft lures I would like to try that I haven't been able to find, so it would be great if I could make them myself.
