    a half face shed

    Hi all,

I'm new the forum and I must start with a confession. I was a bas bp owner. I had casper for a year and everything has been great, good feeding, proper shedding, nice home. But I moved his tank a month ago and didn't realize the drop in temp his tank experianced. Only 80 degrees basking! So now his shed looks horrible.

He's still super friendly and I fixed his tank with new heating and humidity equipment (bad daddy)

I gave him a bath and started using repti shed and saw a vast improvement with the rest of his body. However half his face didn't shed along with one eye, kinda like two face fro, batman(so its not just the eye cap). Does he know to try to get it off? Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    J

You could try giving him another soak or up the humidity in the enclosure. Those are your best bets.

try soaking for a couple of hours....get a little bub with water....not enought to cover her though, make sure tu punch holes at the top of the tub, and leave her there for an hour....make sure there is something in the tank where she can rub agains

Whatever you do, do NOT pick at the shed or the eyes.

A warm soak is a good suggestion. It doesnt need to be a long time either. usually 20 to 40 minutes at most. Very little water in a small storage tub. A couple small holes for air. Just dont leave the snake in there after the water cools down which will happen fast if it is not sitting on a warm surface. Also supervise the soak. BPs have drowned in very little water.

After the soak a wet washcloth gently rubbed over the stuck shed may work. If not dont worry. Just keep the temps and humidity correct in his tank. The moment he begins to shows signs of going into shed again begin putting a small dab of plain clear bacitracin on the stuck eye cap once a day. You can also use regular plain neosporin. The one with no added painkillers.

When he sheds again all 3 eyecaps will come off. The stuck one and the one under it including the other eye.

+1 on not messing with it! The same thing happened to my boy during his first shed with me...only half of his head piece came off! I just made sure his humidity was upped a little (kept him around 70%) and everything came off beautifully during his next shed.

thanks so much guys, Im such a wimp when it comes to soaking him cause he squirms. Never thought of putting a lid on it, funny thing is when he was younger he use to soak himself all the time.

So I'll try a longer soak. Have you ever heard of using a piece of scotch take gently on the cap? Im sue he would let me try, hes so sweet, but part of me sounds like it could be stupid to try.

    Thanks again,

No I wouldnt try that.. Dont do that. It really doesnt sound safe. A member here had a bad vet remove an eyecap but he instead removed the stuck one AND the protective cap over the eye which is needed. The snake is going to lose that eye now.

Eye caps are nothing to mess around with. Anything which uses any kind of force is not a good thing.
