Looking to get a BP
New to BP.net and I was hoping for some feedback from some of you guys.
I have never owned a reptile before but I have wanted a snake since I was a kid. My mom wouldn't have it lol. But I am older now and out on my own and was interested in getting a BP. I have done my research and feel like i'm up for it but I would like to hear what all the owners have to say. Any advice for new guy? Thanks in advance!

Re: Looking to get a BP
good job on doing your research before you get a snake as far as advice the most important thing is temperature and humidity, before you get the snake get the caging and everything taken care of, get a tub or tank [[most people here use tubs,me included]] make sure the tub is in accordance with the size of the BP, get a good UTH or flexwatt tape, and buy a thermostat, i use reptitemp [[$34 at petsmart]] for bedding i use paper towels, easy to clean, easy to replace.... and for a thermometer most people here, again, me included, use the acurite, $12 at walmart....if you need any more help feel free to shoot me a PM =] good luck

Re: Looking to get a BP
to the forum. Definitely have your enclosure up and running for at least a week before bringing home a snake. It will give you a chance to tweak or change anything without having to worry about it affecting the snake. Don't just buy the first one you see. Shop around. They have different personalities and reactions. And you will know when you've found the right one...

Re: Looking to get a BP
It's awesome that you did your research and joined this forum BEFORE purchasing the snake, most people don't even do so.
The best places to buy a Ball python would be from a reputable breeder or a reptile expo/show.
You can check online for breeders that live by you or you can search for breeders around the country.
At reptile expos/shows you can walk around and check out everyone's booth to see what they are selling. Personally I like going to expos a lot more because you get to actually see the snake, handle it, and check it out before you think of buying it. Plus it's so much fun to talk to vendors and have them share their knowledge to you, and they will answer any questions you may have.
If you try purchasing from a breeder or going to an expo/show you can see what you really want. Plus the quality will be a lot better since they are produced from breeders. I've noticed that breeders tend to sell higher quality animals (even if it is a normal) and you will feel so much better knowing that you are purchasing a healthy snake.

Re: Looking to get a BP
They are amazing creatures to own. After you get the temps and humidity down they are extremely easy to care for too, but I would say work on the habitat before purchasing the snake. There is only one problem that I can come up with that comes with snake ownership.....they are REALLY addictive! After you buy one, expect to want more!
