    Keeping BP's and Boas

How many of you that keep snakes just for pets have both BP's and Boas kept in the same room??

I understand about qting them but as its been stated - you can never really be sure they are not carrying IBD.

If I always make sure to sanitize my hands between snakes - will my BP's be okay in the same room as my Boas??? From what I've read IBD is only transmitted thru contact - is this correct.

    Thanks everyone.

I keep all of my boas, ball pythons, and carpet pythons in the same room.

So, do you believe that if you sanitize between touching each snake that you don't have to worry about IBD spreading if one of them had it and you didn't know about it.

Or am I just getting way to paranoid about it.

I don't beleive that any of my snakes have IBD. I have never sanitized between touching snakes. Cleaning day would take forever. If one of my snakes did have IBD, I'm sure my ball pythons would have been dead a long time ago.

    Re: Keeping BP's and Boas

I completely understand that but what I was trying to see was what I could do to minimize the risks to my bps since I only have a total of four snakes - so if sanitizing between handling them would keep anything from spreading - then that is what I will do.

What scares me is that a Boa could be carrying IBD and you won't know it until it is too late for the BP.

So I guess my main question is: Is IBD only transmittable if body fluids are exchanged??

    Re: Keeping BP's and Boas

I keep my boa and ball in the same room, and the other boa will go there once she's out of regular quarantine too. I always wash with warm soap and water between handling any of my snakes or cleaning their cages. Between my boids, I never share any cage furniture.

Great - thanks for the help. I was just nervous introducing an RTB to my BP room.

I keep all of mine in the same rack and sterilize between handling each of them.

    Re: Keeping BP's and Boas

I have both boas and BPs. I only purchase boas from people who have been keeping ball pythons for at least 6 months, usually a year or more. This is what it takes for me personally to feel safe from IBD. Its not scientific in any way, but it works for me.
