As for snakes, I like ball pythons, morph or not. They have a great disposition, and are generally very calm, easy going, and not usually aggressive.

Re: Name the top 10 best pet snakes

Not sure if I can think of 10, but I love all the species I currently have... ball pythons (probably my favorite), corn snakes, jungle carpet python, stimson's python, and a western hognose. All great pets! I'd also like a red-tail boa, if not for the whole IBD threat, and reticulated or burmese pythons if they weren't so darned HUGE. Okay, I guess I can think of 10 - LOL.

    1. Ball Python
    2. Corn Snake
    3. Jungle Carpet Python
    4. Stimson's (or Children's) Python
    5. Western Hognose
    6. Red-tail Boa
    7. Reticulated Python
    8. Burmese Python
    9. Green Tree Python (just for being so beautiful)
    10. Brazilian Rainbow Boa

I'll go ahead and agree with the other posts. I'm biased because I own them, but I love ball pythons and boas (BCI).

What has not been represented so far is pine snakes and other members of pituophis. I have a northern pine snake. Its reasonable size, hilarious demeanor, funny attitude and extreme, sometimes even annoying level of curiosity make it a really fun snake to own.

Other members of pituophis include bull snakes, gopher snakes, and a few others.

Click for some recent images, he will probably be a few feet longer when he's fully grown:

Re: Name the top 10 best pet snakes

Corny answer here but I think the best pet snakes are the ones your willing to do all the research, and I mean all the exhaustive research you can. Before getting. And then really put in the money and work setting up for them.

Because you won't do that for a snake your not really excited about. And if you have done your research you'll know it it's the right snake for you.

As for a list...hmmm from my reading I'd say.

    1. Corn Snake
    2. King Snake
    3. Ball Python
    4. Milk Snake
    5. Eastern Hognose
    6. Old World Ratsnake
    7. New World Ratsnake
    8. Red Tailed Boa
    9. Children's Python
    10. Carpet Python

Thats more of a list of snakes I feel to be the easiest to manage, not my favorite snakes or personal want list. That would look more like.

    1. Old World Ratsnakes
    2. New World Ratsnakes
    3. Green Tree Pythons
    4. Brazilian Rainbow Boa
    5. Corn Snake
    6. Ball Python
    7. Carpet Python
    8. Milk Snake
    9. King Snake
    10. Sand boa

Re: Name the top 10 best pet snakes

I'm not going to make a list of 10, but as far as hardiness and easy husbandry go, of what I've kept I'd find it pretty hard to beat rosy boas (Lichanura trivirgata ssp.). I wouldn't put ball pythons at the top because they tend to like to go off feed, which isn't exactly a quality I'd associate with the best pet snake. Rosy boas though, you never have to worry about humidity as they're a desert species, they can be kept in a 10 gal aquarium their whole lives, and you don't have to worry if their water bowl is empty for a day or two. The only reason I don't keep them now is that they're too small to start on rats and I can't stand mice.

Our Rosy Boa is the sweetest snake. Her skin is so soft and she is very slow moving and gentle. I liken her to a big earthworm.

    1.0 Ball Python
