well im new to all this ball breeding and I see lots of people with lots of morphs still have 1 if not multiple "normal" females, why?......... I mean I know for breeding, but wouldnt you do better to cross morphs and exclude a :normal:?anyway thnx and great site!

I think the fact that you can pick a breedable female up for next to nothing makes them a great investment. Just my 2 cents.

    Re: Normal females

correct me if i'm wrong, but i would assume breeders keep normal females for their co-dom/dom breedings. since breeding those to a normal yields 50/50 normal/morph (according to the odds)

i.e. pastel x normal gets 50% normal and 50% pastel

    Re: Normal females

I'm not breeding yet but in my plans i have set in there to buy normal females that are over 2500 grams. Because larger skanes produce more eggs. So insted of hoping for 6 or 8 eggs, you can hope for 11 or 12 eggs. Plus you can pull different traits out of snakes with 3, 4, 5 morphs in them when you breed to a normal. Then there is always the dinker projects normals that have somthing different to them and you want to see if its a genetic thing. Those will be some of my reasons to buy females when I'm deep into breeding.

    Re: Normal females

Responsible breeders will always keep normal females for outcrossing and proving morphs. A breeding age female normal, while not expensive, is worth her weight in gold to keep morph lines strong and for proving out new or unproven morphs and morph combos.

    Re: Normal females

The simple answer is Super Males!!! when producing base morphs to sale I like to know what I'm getting so a Super Pastel male bred to 3 normals at 6 eggs each I know with out a doubt that I'm getting 18 pastels.. this also reduces the number of females one male has to breed..With breeding a Male super to say a female spider I have no clue how many are going to be Bee's and how many are going to be jsut regular pastels..

thats not always true. You want a female that is the proper weight for her size. Overweight girls will give you more slugs than viable eggs. At least that is my understanding of it.

    Re: Normal females

You also need those normal girls to help you figure out those one of a kind multi-combo's. Breed that 4 or 5 gene combo to a normal and see what morphs made up the combo if you're not sure what's in the mix.

They can also be useful in proving out a dinker.
