mites?

So I just noticed that i have found 2 dark colours small bugs (my guess is mites) in my racks over a weeks period, all snakes have been quarantines prior to being put in the rack. I think they might have been brought in by clothing or something, how do i go about getting rid of this? Im buying the miteoff from the store today, do i change all the substrate in every tub and put mite off on them? and do i apply it to the snakes as well?

Miteoff will kill the mites on your snakes, but it will do nothing about any eggs, so most likely you'll have mites again in 30 days or so when the eggs hatch.

Provent-a-mite is a highly recommended mite treatment that leaves a residue, so as new mites hatch, they are eliminated immediately.

My loyalty lies with Provent-A-Mite. I've never used Mite Off, but it should say whether or not to apply directly to the snake on the container. Some products you can, some products you can't...

According to Zoo Meds website, Mite Off is non-toxic to animals, and according to ReptileSupply.com you can use it directly on the animal, however, I can't say how effective it is...

I would just buy a can of Provent-A-Mite and be done with it. You clean the cage, bake the hides, and treat before replacing the snake. One treatment worked wonders for me. I had two snakes come in that had a horrible case of mites but I haven't seen one since!

Regardless of what you decide, you definitely should change the substrate in every tub, yes.

In the interim you might want to just use paper towels until you get rid of this.

From my experience with mites:
-Wipe out entire take/tub/rack with a reptile safe cleaner, or you could use the "Mite Off".
-If you use real wood, bake it in the oven.
-If you use fake/artificial wood, get a bucket and do a half bleach half water mixture and let it soak for one hour. Rinse well, and repeat, but with out the bleach.
-Soak the snake in a bucket of water, or in your bath tub to get most of the mites off. Then spray the snake with "Mite Off" if that is what you choose to use, if safe for the snake. I had no problem with "Mite Off" but Ihaven't used anything else either.
-Use paper towels as a substrate, and spray them until damp with "Mite Off", do not soak them.

This is what I have always done and it has worked wonders for me.

When i had my tank my first snake got mites. Provent-A-Mite was recommended on the forumn and it worked awesome.

I would be careful with the substrate that you get. Do you know where you got the mites? If you don't know I would probably say any substrate that you got or a hide made out of real wood.
