Shed problem, torn scales...!!!
My juvenile ball python has never had a shed problem before, he has always shed in a single piece of skin, and has never retained any eye caps or sections of his shed. However the other day I looked in at him and saw what I thought was the complete shed sticking out of his hide, so when I lifted up his hide to say hello, I noticed that his lower body was still in its skin, needless to say he was freaked out... He then quickly tried to finish his shed and although it came off in one piece, it looks like he pulled some of his soft new scales atleast partially off with the shed, you can see these dull spots where his nice new skin is abraded slightly, there is no blood though, it sorta just looks like a very shallow scrape that is not reflective like the rest of his new scales. When I looked at the shed itself I noticed these darker areas corresponding to his scrapes and there were these tiny thin scales stuck to the shed, it was as if only the top layer of the new scales was pulled away with the shed, leaving a raw spot on his actual body... You cannot really see it in pictures I tried to take, but its visible under the right lighting and it has a different texture, I put a little antibiotic cream without pain killer on the wounds and they look extremely minor, but I am worried he may be scarred after this, he was so amazing looking before it would be a shame to have scarred him. can anyone tell me if these areas will go away after a few more sheds??? has this ever happened to anyone else??? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Shed problem, torn scales...!!!
are they actually wounds or just dull patches of scales?
If it is what I am thinking it is, it should be back to normal after the next shed.

there is no blood or discoloration except for the fact they are dull, and on the shed i can see these little bits of scale skin that got pulled off from those spots, but its not an open wound or anything like that...

Don't worry about it then. It will be back to normal by the next shed. Basically, it just pulled an extra layer of skin off with the shed. It happens from time to time.

Re: Shed problem, torn scales...!!!
Thats good, I just was upset I ruined his/her beautiful scaly skin, it was all shiny and new and because I thought he/she was done before she actually was it ended up hurting him, very upsetting for me...
By the way is there any way to get a educated guess on the snakes sex without popping? I am tired of having a sexually ambiguous ball python...

Re: Shed problem, torn scales...!!!
It wasn't necessarily your fault. I wouldn't worry about it. It happens.
There is really no good way to tell sex without probing or popping. You can make a guess, but its still going to be 50/50.
