    Cypress is...bad?

I was reading that a lot of people like cypress to use as substrate, but I remember reading in my ball python book (several years old, admittedly) that cypress is not grown for commercial use and thus using it contributes to habitat construction. Has anyone else heard of this?

Never heard of that. I've heard that some playgrounds use it, so I'm sure it's mass produced somewhere.

    Re: Cypress is...bad?

I've never heard that, but cypress is good to use to boost up humidity. I only use it for my Blood pythons, however I have used it once before with one of my Ball pythons. I didn't like it since it dried out quickly (I had her in a tank with a screen sliding lid and a heat lamp, so that's why. I keep them in tubs now), but works very great with humidity which is why I use it for my Bloods.

the problem i have with cypress is unless you get 100% and it has to say 100% on the bag and it will be more!! you can't get it at homedepot/lowes/walmart!! it will be a mix of cypress and pine. some mixes are only 80% cypress.

I got a bag of 100% Cypress from a local nursery, and there was a good sized chunk of plywood in it.

Hey yall!! I just want to let you know I love the Cypress as much as the next person. BUT......
I called the company who makes the Cypress from Home Depot Their "organic" blend.. Just an fyi for you and many. I talked with a rep there and she had told me they cut cedar on the same machines and there is a chance of some getting mixed in with your Cypress. That lil bit of news freaked me out. So I stopped useing it. Not saying yours is bad or to never use the stuff. But I just wanted to put that out there..

    Re: Cypress is...bad?

Just give the place a call like I did. You might be surprised as to what they will say. There is usually a 1800 # on the bags.
I just decided to call one day just to play it safe. Again not saying that they all are like this but this place told me they use the same equipment with cedar products they make and yes there can be some Pcs in the mix..

At least they were honest. As far as how many Parts per bag they think were in there they could not honestly say.
Just a wierd thing I found out and you can as well..

    Re: Cypress is...bad?

Yes I heard that as well about cypress. It was actually a sticky on another website.

I have also heard the horror stories about it being mixed with other stuff.
