More good locks(bee x pastel, het clowns)

The het clowns hooked up again today. They have been locking every few days since Feb 1st. This time they pushed the newspaper aside and let me get a pic(they usually like to hide out underneath the paper). This guy had a bad shed in spite of damp paper towels added to his bin when I noticed he was in the blue, but he didn't let that stop him!

My male bee and female pastel also locked today. They have been breeding off and on since Jan. 25th.

Re: More good locks(bee x pastel, het clowns)

The hets finally finished up this afternoon, so I was able to put the male back in his bin and clean out the female's bin. They always seem to poop and pee right before locking, so then I have to put up with a dirty bin for a day or two. The pastel and bee are still at it, and I am itching to clean her bin out.

I always wonder why everybody uses so little substrate... isnt the point to cover the bottom of the bin? I layer my newspaper probably at least 10 sheets thick to absorb any nastiness...

But back on topic... nice locks and good luck!

Re: More good locks(bee x pastel, het clowns)

I change the paper almost daily, so it would be kind of a waste. Two sheets is just enough to catch the poop and the solid part of the urates so I don't have to scrape it off. I just flip the bin over above my outdoor trash can and everything falls out. Then a quick spray and wipe with a disinfectant and I'm good to go again. I would like to try the white butcher paper that I see some breeders using because I like the sterile clean look, but I stick with newspaper because it means I am not purchasing something that I will just be throwing away(I use the supermarket newsprint ads that get stuffed in the mailbox everyday). My BP's are all very "green" conscious, lol.
