Switching Tank to Tub

Hey! So I think I've finally decided to give up on keeping Rubi in a tank. I rent a room in a house and the temps are never constant. The heat lamp is sapping all of his humidity. The humidity change from Michigan to Colorado is driving me insane. So I have some questions:

1. What size tub should I get? He's used to a 55 gal tank (which i inherited from his previous owner) so I'm thinking bigger size. He's an adult btw.

2. What's the basic set-up of a tub? Substrate, heating, etc

Id use a 34qt or a 41qt tub. Heating is a heat pad or flexwatt controlled by a thermostat, substrate can be aspen or newspaper, really whatever you prefer. I use newspaper, its easy maintenance. Only thing left is a hide or two and a water bowl. Tada, tub set up complete.

I use a 38 qt long tub. Its short and long. For my babies I use 1 hide and 1 water dish and for the adults depending on their size I use1 or no hides. I use a rack system though so i would recommend that you use a hide. I'm on my phone so i can't post a picture but i have some on my website on 'my set up page.' As for set up a heat pad or flexwatt and at the very least a dimmer since you said the room temps vary. You may still have humidity issues but it will be too much humidity now. To solve that just put more holes in the tub. I use newspaper because its free and is fool proof.

For my tubs not in a rack, I use a 41 quart Sterilite locking lid tub from Walmart, one small kitty litter pan as a hide, large crock water dish, Accurite digital thermometer/hygrometer, flexwatt and a thermostat.

The hide is large enough for the adult females to choose the cool end or warm end of the hide. When done, it looks like this:

Thanks so much for all the help. I think that until I am staying put for a while (where the house temp is above 60) that I will switch him. I like the one with the aspen (right?). So he will only need one hide? Can you explain the heating gradient? I have a Reptitemp 500R for the time being but would love some tips on setting it up. I need a new digi therm/hygrom b/c mine quit measuring humidity & I can't find the receipt. I will be picking up the Accurite one. I also have a UTH for right now as well.
