    Thinking about changing substrate...

I have been using unprinted newspaper as the substrate in my bp enclosure from day one. It's easy to clean up, and is cheap, but it doesn't hold humidity.

I was thinking about changing to a wood/cypress/mulch type substrate. Would that help with keeping humidity up in my enclosure (I currently have a wood cage, with flexwatt and a heat panel for heating).

What do you folks think is the best stuff to keep up humidity, and to clean? And speaking of cleaning -- how do you clean up that stuff? Does it clump up when the snake urates? Do you replace it all? Sorry, never used the stuff, so not really sure.

Also, do you foresee any problems (stress) by switching substrates?

    Thanks,

    George

Out of all the loose substrates I prefer Shredded Aspen... It looks nice, easy to clean, and is decent in terms of holding humidity.

Spot cleaning whenever necessarry and refilling/disinfecting the tub/cage a couple times a month will do the trick.

I too use this stuff. Always worked for me.

However, I would like to add, that if you get a new snake, find out what it's bedding was. I had one snake that wouldn't eat. Called the guy I bought it from and he had it on newpaper. Changed to newspaper and now the snake eats like a champ. I will slowly add Aspen until I complete remove the newspaper.

    Good Luck!

I tried Cypress Mulch when I got my first rack, 2 of my snakes would not eat, and also I didnt like how dusty it got when it dried. So I went back to newspaper. I have use aspen, is a good bedding, but newspaper is just easier.
