    My first BP wooooo!!

I got the fever a few months ago and it wouldnt go away. So I did my research and eagerly waited for the day I could get my BP. I live in nyc so I had to travel out of the city up to whiteplains but fortunately most of my research generally said it was best to buy directly from knowledgable breeders anyway. The reptile expo was on Sunday. It was not anything like I imagined..Thousands of snakes everywhere!! I was so used to seeing them housed in tanks like in pet stores that I was a bit shocked to see stacks of snakes in small plastic containers. Freakin amazing!!

I took home a healthy looking normal female that was extremely inquisitive and not the least bit frightened. I was worried on tuesday when I handled her for the first time because there was a bit of moisture around her mouth and she rubbed her nose against my hand. Thought she had a RI. Yesterday however she was drinking out of her water bowl and proceeded to rub her face against a rock like she was doing to my hand..

Went to the pet store and got her a mouse b/c the breeders said they fed their snakes every wednesday. Put her in a feeding tub, knocked the mouse on the head and dropped it in. She struck it in under 30 seconds! I think shes happy and healthy. Im extremely pleased..

Do you guys think the moisture is something to worry about? I couldn't see any moisture today and I think it was just from her drinking. No bubbles around the mouth..

Let me know what you guys think. I'm so happy she ate! Sick BPs dont eat do they?

Welcome to the addiction my friend!

I'm not the most knowledgeable person here, so I'll let others chime in with what to look for of it is a RI. I do remember reading somewhere that occasionally a wet mouth is from a BP that just got a drink, so don't panic yet.

As far as feeding goes, I think it depends on the snake, some might eat, others won't. Just hang in there!

    Re: My first BP wooooo!!

honestly it is your first bp. im not gonna jump to the conclusion that your snake is suffering from an RI because you are new to the addiction. it is easy to get paranoid and believe that every little thing your snake does is the cause of something ill concieved. my snakes when handled rub their faces through my hands all the time, just cause their trying to go somewhere. keep an eye on her for the next couple days and see if there is any excesive amount of mucus coming from the lips. if you are able try and see if you can peel her lower lip down alittle to see if she has any buble in the mouth.
good luck with her and welcome to the addiction.

    Re: My first BP wooooo!!

Well first if you haven't yet please check out the care sheet as it has sooooo much information and pls be sure that you have your temps set up correctly.

I have 2 from the shows and they drank allot when they got home. She could be getting ready to shed as mine will rub their head against the moisture on the tank when they are getting ready to.

Also you do not have to feed in a seperate tub. They will not get aggressive when you put your hand in the tank. They know the difference!! I did this too when I got my first snake. I found it to be a pain in the butt and often times it would stress out the snake.

Ok...hope this helps....welcome to the forum and the addiction!!

    Re: My first BP wooooo!!

to the addiction. Some other signs of RI are you will normally hear a wheezing or popping when they breathe. Sounds kind of like a person with a chest cold. They will also tend to keep their head elevated alot trying to breathe better. The snakes I have picked up at expos tended to drink a ton of water the first few days...

    Re: My first BP wooooo!!

heh this forum is pretty quick, thanks for all the replies! Got home and my BP is soaking up some heat from her heat pad/light looking pretty happy. Humidity and temp look good. I think my BP is fine and I'm just anxious b/c I'm new to this and what not as someone above suggested. Once I started reading about RIs it lead to IBD and not so good feelings..

Anyway Isis (as i chose to name her) will be closely monitored and taken care of!
