uth question?
how hot is one supposed to get? i have one that plugs in to the wall. thats it. and i touched it. its pretty dang warm. so i added some bedding to the hotside just to kinda put more stuff in the way of it. but the heater itself it really warm. but when i touch the substrate it isnt that hot. and the snake doesnt seem to mind. so whats yalls take on it?

Re: uth question?
UTHs can and will get too hot for your snake, which can result in serious burns. UTHs should ALWAYS have some sort of t-stat or at least a dimmer to control the heat output.
An extra thick layer of substrate won't do anything if/when your snake decides to burrow down into the substrate, which does happen.

Re: uth question?
this one does have any stat or dimmer. it just gets to a certain temp and stays. its not super hot. the breeder i got it from uses em. and he said it works just fine. the snake never borrows though. she just goes in her little hide. on the warm side. so i guess its a good temp. i mean the substrate isnt hot. just warm. so i think it will be ok

Re: uth question?
You need to put out a couple bucks and pick up a thermometer with a probe, place it on top of the glass where the UTH is and find out how hot it is. If it goes over 95 degrees, and it probably will be, you have to pick up some sort of dimmer to manually control the temp. Assuming the snake will be ok because the substrate isn't hot is ignorant thinking and when it was stated the snake could burrow, all that means is it can move the substrate around, sit directly on top of the exposed UTH and get burnt. That does and will happen. If you are convinced that since you're breeder said it's ok so then everything should be ok, why did you take the time to ask here?

Re: uth question?
Everyone is correct. You really need to have something to control that UTH or your snake could get severely burned. If you can't afford a thermostat, at least get a dimmer switch on there.

Re: uth question?
And since that UTH is the 8W version (IIRC) it will easily be over 100F and more like 120F which is way too hot!
