you look at the cage and go " yep looks like it needs to be sprayed" and spray it.
My cages only have 3 types of humidity, Dry, Semi Dry, And humid as crap. perfect sheds on every animal.I only spray ball pythons when its dry. I spray everyday when their in shed.

For the 10 bucks it will cost, the thermo is a nice addition to the temp gun. I use both, that way I can glance at the temps of my cages when I get up, go to bed, and a thousand times in between. It can be annoying to open up the cage, flip over a hide and disturb a snake to check the temps.
Having a hydrometer is always a bonus too, especially since balls are right in the middle for their needs. Doesn't hurt to be aware of what it is.

Re: Do I need an Accurite if I get a Temp Gun?
What I like about having both is that the accurite records highs and lows, so I can be sure the temps aren't dipping too low at night. I have the flexwatt on a t-stat, so the hot spot is quite stable, but the ambient temp is somewhat more variable. And of course it measures the humidity, which the temp gun obviously does not.
The temp gun, has the advantage of being able to check several places quickly. Hot spot, cool end, somewhere in the middle, actual temp of the snake's skin, etc.
I don't keep an accurite in every enclosure, I have a few that I move around to where ever I feel I need it, like when setting up a new rack or something. But I'm really glad I have both.

I have a temperature gun to spot check temperatures. I also have one of the $7 temperature/humidity units from Walmart. This one doesn't have a probe, just measure the environment it's in. I move it between tubs randomly to check humidity. I always put it in a tub with a snake in shed as a priority though. I have heat tape for the hot and cool spot on a thermostat.
