Merry Christmas From Hawaii - Field Herping and Wildlife Edition

Well I've been enjoying a vacation with the family on the island of Kauai.

Here's some of the herps we've had the pleasure of encountering:

This cane toad(?) entertained us on our first night. I know they're invasive and not good to have around, but I can't help but enjoy the company of a toad.

We've found a few geckos inside the beach house we're staying in. They're cute!

We've had multiple encounters with large green sea turtles in the past few days out in the ocean. The most notable encounter was a ~200-300lb turtle that was very curious about us, and stayed in our vicinity while we were snorkeling close to shore for a good half hour as we watched him munch on plant material. He's stayed in the area for the past few days and has become a constant entertainment to watch him swimming.

This was the first time I had a camera with me, and the first time we saw one out on land. The lifeguards weren't sure if it was healthy (looks like it has some cracks in the shell?) and called a local turtle rescue to come check it out just in case.

Im sure youll run into a few down there that smoke cane toad. If not already aware about them be sure not to get their somewhat poisonous crap on or near your face. They are cool lil things.

Just didnt know cane toads made it to There from Australia.

i think they got the name cane toad after they were introduced to australia to eat the bugs in the sugar cane fields.

the more common name in S.A. is marine toad.

I wouldn't say cane toads made it to Australia; they were taken by people, but I'm sure that's what you meant.

    Poor turtle!

That's one species I really admire.

That little gecko is a mourning gecko or Lepidodactylus lugubris also an invasive species to Hawaii. They are Pathogenic that means no male required to lay eggs I 12 of the little girls quite fun in a group tank. But if you don't want to get over run with them you have to check for eggs and crack them. I only started with 1.

Parthenogenic, not Pathogenic. Pathogens are diseases. Parthenos means virgin. Pathos means suffer/passion.
