Re: Hi People new website up!!!

It’s ironic, because I have been doing a ton of research lately on the Burmese Python. I think they are absolutely beautiful animals but just too large for me, and I’m still a beginner.

I have read that they have docile temperaments but their bite can be nasty. I was actually looking into the Dwarf Burmese but I understand these are expensive and difficult to find. What do you think about the temperament of the Burms?

Also is the size and danger of the snake a real issue or hype? Is it more of a common sense thing? (Secure the enclosure, always have 2 people present when handling, yada, yada, yada) I’m concerned because I understand both adult Burms and Retics can kill an adult pereson, if the adult is sleeping and the animal gets access to an otherwise unaware sleeping adult – real or hype?

Sorry for all the questions, thought I’d ask someone who really knows : )

    hi mate
Just because your a beginner don't mean your not ready for a burm i know plenty of people who's first snake was a burm like myself
just know your research and ask yourself
are you really ready for this?
    do you have the space?
am i going to be able to provide everything this burm needs to have a safe healthy happy life?
and is there always going to be someone there for me if the worst happens?

yes burms have a really docile temperament but thats if you give regular handling but! every animal has there own personalities just say your friend has a really tame burm that does NOT mean yours will be.

There bite can be nasty but to be honest you shouldnt be putting yourself in a situation to get bit these are the rules i follow..
ALWAYS use feeding tongs and study there behavior
the more you study the more you have a chance of not getting bit its like reading there mind.

A dwarf burm ok let me tell you something THEY ARE THE DEVIL! so ive been told hundreds of times ive never kept one so i really can't help you there sorry.

Yes the size of a burm can be a danger if you haven't got someone pressant witch you should always have with any snake over 5-6 foot so its more of common sense thing and for a burm to get out when your asleep and kill you i have never heard of but it could happen.. but when your dealing with big boids you should leave no room for error! all i can say to that is make sure your viv is locked and that theres noway for the burm to get out so its common sense really.

    Daniel

My second snake was a burmese python

I have read that they have docile temperaments but their bite can be nasty. I was actually looking into the Dwarf Burmese but I understand these are expensive and difficult to find. What do you think about the temperament of the Burms?

Most snake bites can be nasty. A bite from an adult large constrictor is not going to pleasant. And bites do occur regardless of what species you keep. Thats just part of the reptile hobby. Every snake has a different personality. Dwarf burms should become more avaiable within the next few years. And along with captive breeding you will start to relize the temperments calming down just like with burms, retics, and rocks. they get there bad rep because they are wild caught animals.

It common sense. Yes these animals are capable of killing a human being but so are dogs and horses. Alot of things can take a adult humans life. You could be out shopping at walmart and a fellow shopper kill you in the store or the parking lot but that does not stop people from shopping. Its common sense to have a locking enclosure. They do not manufacture a fish tank that is capable of housing an adult large constrictor safely. But there are TONS of manufacturers that make large python cages. That will safely house your animals. Animal plastics, vision, sentec, boaphile, boamasters thats just to name a few of them. If you have proper caging there will be no situations come up where an adult is sleeping and they encounter your pet python. Also alot of the times these animals become conditioned to eating a certian prey and will refuse alot of other prey. When I take mine out there not thinking im a food item and im sure if they did manage to get out of there enclosures the first thing on there mind would not be im going to find a human to eat. People think there man eating monsters and there not. Also the having two adults present when working with animals over a certain length is a matter of opinion. I do think its smart to practice safe handling and thats a great idea but its not something I can say I do at all times. When you work with these animals everyday You start to relize what your boundaries are and how far you can push your snake to doing what you want it to do before it gets ill. I do not have two people present with me everytime I clean cages because I am comfortable with my animals I can tell if there having a bad day and dont want to be messed with. I do however always have someone in the house with me while I clean the large snakes so there in range for me to yell if I do for some reason need help. I personally think hook training is the best safety precaution you can do when handling large snakes. In my experience if my animals are going to bite me its going to be when I go into there cages because they do have great feedind responses and most of my bites have been from that exact reason. But when there hook trianed and know they are not getting fed it makes things alot easier.

Sorry for all the questions, thought I’d ask someone who really knows : )

Thank you so much Daniel & Denial - Very, very constructive and insightful information. Thats funny about Dwarf Burms - I do think you are totally right about simply purchasing the right type of enclosure. Just an ounce of common sense!
